Komen Foundation vs. Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Thursday denied political pressure from anti-abortion groups had anything to do with its decision to cut off funding for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, trying to contain a crisis between the two leading women's health groups.

In a 3-1/2 minute video statement posted on its website and the video site YouTube, the Komen foundation said critics have mischaracterized its decision to deny new money to Planned Parenthood and warned the controversy could distract attention from the struggle against breast cancer.

"We will never bow to political pressure," Komen founder Nancy Brinker said in the video.

"The scurrilous accusations being hurled at this organization are profoundly hurtful to so many of us," she said. "But more importantly, they are a dangerous distraction from the work that still remains to be done in ridding the world of breast cancer."

The Komen foundation, known for its pink ribbon symbol and Race for the Cure fundraisers, has collected more than $1.9 billion for breast cancer research and programs. It has affiliates in more than 100 U.S. cities and 50 countries.

Planned Parenthood provides abortion, birth control and other health services to women. It had received about $700,000 annually from Komen to provide access to mammograms for low income women.

Brinker said the funding change reflects a new internal strategy aimed at using donation money more effectively by eliminating duplicate grants and tightening eligibility rules.

That includes withholding funding from a group under investigation by U.S. authorities. Republican lawmaker Cliff Stearns is probing Planned Parenthood over its use of taxpayer funds.

"Regrettably, this strategic shift will affect any number of long-standing partners. But we have always done what is right for our organization, for our donors and volunteers," she said.

UPROAR ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Planned Parenthood said the Komen foundation had succumbed to political pressure from anti-abortion groups. It said such groups have repeatedly threatened Komen over its affiliation.

The decision set off an uproar among Komen supporters who also back Planned Parenthood, as evidenced by tens of thousands of comments on social media sites Facebook and Twitter.

"Susan Komen would not give in to bullies or fear. Too bad the foundation bearing her name did," writer Judy Blume, known for her books on girls growing up, said via Twitter.

Komen was Brinker's sister who died of breast cancer, inspiring the organization's creation.

Planned Parenthood, already barred from using federal funds to provide abortions, has seen the U.S. tax dollars it still receives for family aid to poor women come under intensifying Republican scrutiny in Congress.

The group has also come under attack from lawmakers in several states over the past year, including North Carolina, Indiana and Kansas, who have attempted to block state funding.

In Kansas some local prosecutors are pressing criminal charges against Planned Parenthood, alleging it failed to maintain paperwork related to the abortions it provided.

Money from Komen has helped thousands of women in rural and underserved communities get breast health education, screenings, and mammogram referrals, Planned Parenthood said in a statement.

The assistance translates into 170,000 of the 4 million clinical breast exams the group has performed over the past five years, and more than 6,400 of 70,000 mammogram referrals.

Planned Parenthood complained that Komen officials have not responded to requests to meet and talk about the decision to cut the funding.

Tomorrow, Thursday the Senate Judiciary Committee will be meeting to discuss Sen. Leahy's version of the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization. Leahy's VAWA bill contains many, many controversial provisions, and does nothing to assure real victims, and ALL victims - are helped.

At the meeting Sen. Charles Grassley will be proposing an amendment to bring the domestic violence industry to heel. The DV industry is certain to oppose these accountability measures. So please contact these members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and tell them that abuse victims are demanding that VAWA be made accountable to meet their needs.

Tell them to support Sen. Grassley's efforts to bring accountability to the Violence Against Women Act.

What can you say about a misandrist piece of shit that loses his job to a woman because she is a woman and now defends women like they are royalty? Idiot? Loser? Those fit,just to name a few. How low does your self esteem have to be when you start excusing the gender that dumped on you? Pretty low but in Fooltrelle's case I willing to say it is nonexistant. It takes a brave man to look at things the way they are and try to deal with them but then again Fooltrelle is neither "brave" nor a "man". He is a spineless jellyfish who submits to whatever his mistresses want him to do. He is the type to throw other men under the bus to gain favor with women. I've tried ignoring this putz for as long as I could but he doesn't go away. You would think he would get tired of looking stupid but that would be wrong because apparently Fooltrelle thrives on it. Where is the VAWA money going?

The Senate Judiciary Committee vote on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was postponed until this coming week to allow more time for staff to negotiate several sticking points. And well they should, because victims are demanding to know, "Where's all the money going?"

Time and time again, domestic violence victims are being turned away by the very agencies that are supposed to be helping them, or are getting the DV runaround. One Department of Justice audit reached this disturbing conclusion:

$638,298, or about 47 percent, of $1.3 million given to Jane Doe, Inc., also known as the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, was identified as unsupported and unallowable payroll expenditures, unallowable bonus payments, and unallowable and unreasonable conference expenditures.

So the problem isn't a lack of funding. The problem is lack of accountability.

Today, right now, call the senators listed below. Tell them to assure the VAWA reauthorization bill S. 1925 is strengthened to assure accountability so taxpayer money is used the way it's supposed to be:

How the CDC is overstating sexual violence in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a study suggesting that rates of sexual violence in the United States are comparable to those in the war-stricken Congo. How is that possible?

The CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey found that, in the United States in 2010, approximately 1.3 million women were raped and an additional 12.6 million women and men were victims of sexual violence. It reported, “More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius hailed the report for giving “a clear picture of the devastating impact these violent acts have on the lives of millions of Americans.”

In fact, what the study reveals is the devastating impact that careless advocacy research can have on truth. The report proposes an array of ambitious government-sponsored “prevention strategies” and recommends “multi-disciplinary service centers” offering survivors psychological and legal counseling as well as housing and economic assistance. But survivors of sexual violence would be better served by good research and sober estimates — not inflated statistics and sensationalism.

The agency’s figures are wildly at odds with official crime statistics. The FBI found that 84,767 rapes were reported to law enforcement authorities in 2010. The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, the gold standard in crime research, reports 188,380 rapes and sexual assaults on females and males in 2010. Granted, not all assaults are reported to authorities. But where did the CDC find 13.7 million victims of sexual crimes that the professional criminologists had overlooked?

It found them by defining sexual violence in impossibly elastic ways and then letting the surveyors, rather than subjects, determine what counted as an assault. Consider: In a telephone survey with a 30 percent response rate, interviewers did not ask participants whether they had been raped. Instead of such straightforward questions, the CDC researchers described a series of sexual encounters and then they determined whether the responses indicated sexual violation. A sample of 9,086 women was asked, for example, “When you were drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent, how many people ever had vaginal sex with you?” A majority of the 1.3 million women (61.5 percent) the CDC projected as rape victims in 2010 experienced this sort of “alcohol or drug facilitated penetration.”

What does that mean? If a woman was unconscious or severely incapacitated, everyone would call it rape. But what about sex while inebriated? Few people would say that intoxicated sex alone constitutes rape — indeed, a nontrivial percentage of all customary sexual intercourse, including marital intercourse, probably falls under that definition (and is therefore criminal according to the CDC).

Other survey questions were equally ambiguous. Participants were asked if they had ever had sex because someone pressured them by “telling you lies, making promises about the future they knew were untrue?” All affirmative answers were counted as “sexual violence.” Anyone who consented to sex because a suitor wore her or him down by “repeatedly asking” or “showing they were unhappy” was similarly classified as a victim of violence. The CDC effectively set a stage where each step of physical intimacy required a notarized testament of sober consent.

The report also called for more research on “sexism” and urged “collective action” against media messages that “objectify and degrade women.” In the familiar jargon of feminist theory, the CDC said: “It is important to continue addressing the beliefs, attitudes and messages that are deeply imbedded in our social structures.”

Why is the CDC using methods of advocacy research that are anathema to genuine social science? The answer is suggested by a posting on the White House Web site this month by Lynn Rosenthal, a presidential adviser on violence against women:

“Early in the Administration, the Vice President convened federal agencies to assess trends and identify gaps in our response to violence and abuse. We identified data collection as one of the biggest challenges we face in understanding and combatting these crime. Thanks to the hard work of [Attorney General Eric] Holder, the FBI, law enforcement leaders, and the women’s organizations who have long advocated for this change, we are one step further towards meeting that challenge.”

While that passage referred to the FBI’s recently revised definition of rape — and not the CDC survey — it shows how the study fits into the administration’s effort to apply the advocacy agenda of the women’s lobby to rape research. That would explain how feminist theory found its way into the report. But why would CDC officials, who are experienced in resisting political pressure, cooperate?

Perhaps they felt the study would draw needed attention to the genuine problem of sexual violence. That is an understandable but recklessly misguided conclusion. Faulty studies send scarce resources in the wrong directions; more programs on sexism, stereotypes and social structures, for example, are unlikely to help victims of violence. Defining sexual violence down obscures the gradations in culpability that are essential to effective criminal law, and it holds up a false mirror on our society. The CDC should recall this study.

Campaign for Liberty could be shut down virtually overnight if someone - say a Federal Reserve official - claimed a YouTube video we promoted was a "copyright violation.

You don't need to think very hard to imagine what a hostile government agent or bureaucrat could do with this power. Our economy AND our freedom are threatened in one massive takeover.

Twitter announced Thursday that it would begin restricting Tweets in certain countries, marking a policy shift for the social media platform that helped propel the popular uprisings recently sweeping across the Middle East.

Experienced Congress-watchers are telling us they've never seen anything like this.

Internet users, tech companies, and non-profits joined together to defend fundamental rights on the internet. To a lot of elites in Congress and the corporate world, the internet is just something that lazy teenagers use to spam people with pictures of photoshopped unicorns. The blackout showed that the peer-to-peer internet is about empowerment, and that when we work together we can defeat the corrupt politics of Washington D.C.

The New York Times and Talking Points Memo have both published good articles on how the web blackout was organized.

For months, four senators were the only force blocking passage of PIPA/SOPA. They even promised to filibuster the bill back when most politicians were against them. We need to make sure we support and vote for leaders like them who are willing to going to go out on a limb and oppose SOPA before it was popular to do so. Hollywood thinks Congress is on their leash: Motion Picture Association of America President Chris Dodd just threatened to cut off Hollywood campaign contributions to any member of Congress who doesn’t pass his Internet-censorship legislation.

After Congress shelved the controversial PIPA and SOPA bills, Dodd told Fox News:

“Those who count on quote ‘Hollywood’ for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who’s going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don’t ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don’t pay any attention to me when my job is at stake.”

This is what corruption looks like in Washington. It’s outrageous that Dodd — himself a former senator — is leveling these threats. Our elected officials must send a signal back to Dodd and the rest of K Street that our nation’s laws can’t be bought.

The FBI shut down Thursday one of the world's most popular file-sharing websites, MegaUpload.com, and announced the arrest of four of the people behind it in a global crackdown against the suspected online pirates.

Here -- check it out: If SOPA and PIPA pass it'll just broaden the government's power to do things like this: MegaUpload.com. (And make it ILLEGAL for us to link to sites that are seized -- like we just did in the last sentence.)

Today was nuts, right?

Google launched a petition. Wikipedia voted to shut itself off. Senators' websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write them. NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks.

You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before. Tech companies and users teamed up. Tens of millions of people who make the internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms. The free network defended itself. Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear: from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet.

The really crazy part? We might even win.

Approaching Monday's crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA. Last week there were 5. And it just takes just 41 solid "no" votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate. What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach.

But don't trust predictions. The forces behind SOPA & PIPA (mostly movie companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have the votes to pass. Members of Congress know SOPA & PIPA are unpopular, but they don't understand why--so they're easily duped by superficial changes. The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical. Here are two things to think about:

1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week. Pick up the phone each morning and call your Senators' offices, until they vote "no" on cloture. If your site participated today, consider running a "Call the Senate" link all next week.

2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators' district offices. We don't have a cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we're too exhausted! any takers?). So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the Senator to vote "no" on cloture. These drop-in visits make our spectacular online protests more tangible and credible.

California eliminates Commission on Women

Due to budget problems in California the state eliminated the California Commission on Women. The program was cut by California Governor Jerry Brown. This is a courageous move and as you can imagine it is one that has the feminasties shitting in their panties and squealing like the swine they are. It is more than eliminating a useless government program it is also about standing up to the feminist lobby and saying "enough,we won't allow you to abuse us anymore". It is about standing up to a form of evil and a very powerful one at that. What Governor Brown did is a gutsy move and he should be congratulated for it. He can be contacted here. Let him know that he did a courageous thing and that he is applauded for doing so. Let's tell him that gender issues are not just women's issues and that what men have to say are valid concerns as well. The more of us he hears from the better so let's contact him today.

What Should You Do When Someone You Love Becomes a Men’s Rights Activist?

That's the question posed by an advice-seeker who wants to know what to do about his increasingly misogynist dad. We decided to look for a few more tips.

Earlier this week, Dad-Related Dilemma wrote to Slate's Dear Prudence,

My mom left my dad for another man 10 years ago, when my brother and I were in grade school. She took us with her, and the loss of his family turned my father into a bitter man. He now considers himself a men's rights activist. From what I can tell, the men's rights movement my dad belongs to believes that American law and society has institutionalized misandry. One website my dad frequents warns men not to date single mothers because their children might accuse the boyfriend of molesting them to reap the benefits of victimhood. My dad speaks often about the men's rights movement, and when my brother and I don't want to listen, he accuses us of being brainwashed by feminists. His behavior doesn't come across as crazy so much as it does misogynistic. Now I'm 18 and could stop seeing him if I wanted to. But my brother is younger and still has to see him. My mom doesn't know the full story because we don't want her to overreact. What should we do?

Prudie advises telling Dad he needs to quit the MRA talk if he wants to have a relationship with his sons, which is solid advice, but is there any way to tackle his bad ideas head-on? How should one argue with a loved one who's turned into a misogynist? I talked to David Futrelle of Man Boobz, who is somewhat bearish on MRAs' ability to change: "Unfortunately, in most cases, I don't think it's possible to talk someone out of a Men's Rights obsession. For most of them, it seems to be driven not by facts — they're happy to simply make up facts to fit their worldview — but by feelings, most obviously by rage at women." However, he adds,

The one argument I think you CAN make to MRAs who are not too far gone is this: it's not healthy for you to spend so much time stewing in your anger online. Instead of trying to help men work through their personal issues with women, the [men's rights media] encourages men to cultivate their rages and hatreds, to remain stuck. That's not healthy for them, or for society at large.

Jezebel contributor Hugo Schwyzer offered some more ideas. He says "most MRAs come from a place of huge disappointment. Yes, it's entitlement too, but it's also a deep place of hurt." How to get past that hurt? Schwyzer says,

In terms of advice, it's not easy for a son to challenge his Dad. But drive the conversation towards individual women — not the "bitches" and "harpies" of his father's imagination, but the women Dad has loved. A mother? A sister? An ex? There is inside every MRA I've ever met a stopped-up well of compassion and love for women. It's getting to the good stories (and there are always GOOD stories) about women that is so vital. And from those stories about individual women Dad has loved, perhaps the son can talk about what those women went through and experienced.

He adds,

It's also important for Dad to be able to talk about his own pain — not his rage, which is a response to pain, but the pain itself. Men's Rights Activism is the public manifestation of an experience of betrayal (whether that betrayal is "real" or not, it's perceived as real.) Getting to the source of that rage is vital.

I wouldn't ordinarily advocate trying to get to the bottom of a men's rights activist's pain — lots of MRAs talk about how much they'd like to inflict pain on women, and frankly, I don't have much empathy for them. But in this case we're talking about a dude (or maybe a lady) and his dad. This is someone he loves and someone his brother has to have regular contact with — and it's not clear that DRD wants to cut his dad off, either. That's always an option — Schwyzer notes that there could come a point when "it becomes too painful" for DRD to keep engaging with his dad. But if he hasn't reached that point yet, it may be worth trying to reach out. After all, if anyone's going to get MRAs to stop spewing hate, it's probably the people they love.

New law will strip Americans of their rights

Tell Congress To Undo The NDAA, Ban Indefinite Military Detention Of Americans

President Obama just signed the National Defense Authorization Act into law despite startling provisions that will allow the military to indefinitely detain American citizens. It's a travesty, defying basic principles of justice and due process in perhaps the most extreme respect our nation has ever seen.

Thankfully, several lawmakers are keeping up the fight. Senator Dianne Feinstein has introduced legislation to undo these provisions of the NDAA, in the form of the Due Process Guarantee Act. We need to urge other Senators to support it.

The Due Process Guarantee Act of 2011 amends the Non-Detention Act of 1971 by providing that a Congressional authorization for the use of military force does not authorize the indefinite detention—without charge or trial—of U.S. citizens who are apprehended domestically.

If there's enough of a public outcry, we have a real chance of making this happen: More than 40 senators voted against the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA -- and that was before the media and general public caught on to what was happening. Please urge your Senators to remedy this terrible wrong.

A couple of nights ago I was watching The Factor,O'Reilly was out so there was a guest host. They did an interview with GOP presidential candidate Senator Michele Bachmann (Minn.) in which she states that the nation needs a strong woman to lead and she even compared herself to former Prime Minister Margret Thatcher. Does this mean that if she is elected she will snub the British,trivilizing their concerns like Thatcher did to us when we wanted to go into Grenada? Bachmann did a Palin move,positioning herself as a right wing feminist. This is a move that could come around to hurt her,just as Palin lost male support the same thing will happen to Bachmann. Bachmann is even supported by the Concerned Women of America or CWA which just the right wing version of NOW. CWA's chairwoman Penny Nance joined with Bill Bennett,author of the highly misndric book,The Book of Man.

Nance made the following statement to shame men who refuse to be disposable puppets and cannon fodder for bitches like her and mangina sell outs like Bennett. Here is what she said:

This dismissal is easy to evaluate. Penny Nance – the CEO of “Concerned Women of America” said in an interview on Fox News “ Concerned women for America is the nation’s largest public policy organization and we love men. The protest against Verizon is over,we won. Under pressure Verizon conceded and removed the anti-male message from their Verizon Foundation website. The protest was successful because all of us,especially those front soldier protestors,were willing to get in Verizon's face and tell them that we are opposed to their misandry. There have even been threats to get the FBI involved even though there is nothing personal about a Facebook or Linkedin profiles. To date, AVFM has not been contacted by the FBI or any other law enforcement agency.

Radfem Hub and other major sources for feminist news and commentary have remained curiously silent on the matter. There is no mention of the release either on Radfem, Jezebel, Feministe or Feministing as might have been expected considering the comments on Reddit. It is assumed, however that much attention has been paid amongst the feminist community to this story and its developments.

With the publication of the Radfem Data it is expected that more identities will be revealed and also that MRAs and other interested parties in the broader press will write about the postings and the implications for the public perception of feminism.

Sexual abuse by women

Teenage girls who admit to sexually abusing others are more likely to indulge in victim-blaming and to be preoccupied by sex than their peers who aren’t sexual offenders, a new study finds.

The findings are similar to what is seen in men, researchers report in the December issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Female sex offenders are less common than male sex offenders, but women who sexually abuse are under-studied, said lead researcher Cecilia Kjellgren of the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at Lund University.

"People have a tendency to neglect the fact of females who sexually offend," Kjellgren told LiveScience. "Young people who have been sexually abused by a female, they don't get the same attention." [6 Gender Myths Busted]

Studying sexual offenses

Kjellgren and her colleagues wanted to move beyond the small, clinical samples of female sexual offenders that have been the main source of information about this group. In 2003 and 2004, they surveyed third-year high-school students in cities in Norway and Sweden, gathering anonymous responses from 5,059 young women between the ages of 17 and 20.

The students completed the surveys during school hours, answering questions about alcohol consumption, drug use, sexual behavior, their relationships with their parents and certain attitudes, including their acceptance of gender stereotypes and their belief in "rape myths." Rape myths are common but false beliefs about rape, Kjellgren said, such as "many guys think sex is more exciting if the girl resists his advances," and "a girl who follows a guy home after the first date implies that she is willing to have sex."

The students also reported whether they had "ever talked someone into, used pressure or forced somebody to masturbate them, have oral or anal sex, or sexual intercourse." This was defined as coercive sex, which falls under the umbrella of sexual abuse. Gender of the victim was not specified.

Sexual coercion

Of the 4,363 female students who completed enough of the survey to be included in the study, 0.8 percent admitted to coercing someone into sexual activity. Only the Swedish data allowed a gender-to-gender comparison, Kjellgren said. In the Swedish subset, of the 124 students who said they'd coerced someone sexually, 23 were female and 101 were male.

Among those teens, "females constitute one-fifth of the total of sexually coercive young people," Kjellgren said. That number was higher than seen in studies on sexual abuse incidents reported to the police or social services, she said, where women make up about 1 percent of sex offenders.

"It's really a small tip of the iceberg that is reported to authorities," Kjellgren said.

The researchers compared the characteristics of the sex offender females with those of girls who had nonsexual behavior problems, such as aggressive behavior, to find out whether there were any risk factors specific to sex offenses. Several turned up.

For both young men and women, those who reported more preoccupation with sex and sexual thoughts were more likely to have coerced someone sexually, the researchers found. Another risk factor was acceptance of rape myths — even though those myths typically cast men as aggressors and women as victims. Kjellgren suspects that the victim-blaming inherent in these myths helps justify sexual coercion no matter the genders.

"When you do something wrong, you turn to excuses," she said. "Those rape myths work for you in a sense. They help you find excuses."

Violent pornography

Having friends who watched a lot of violent pornography was also associated with being a female sex offender, Kjellgren found, though the girls' own rates of watching violent porn was not. That could be because the girls are hiding their own porn-viewing habits under the veil of their friends, Kjellgren said.

"It's easier to tell on the questionnaire when it comes to friends, not to yourself," she said.

The study doesn't prove, however, that violent porn in a social circle causes sexual assault, as there are too many variables to be sure of such a connection. For one thing, porn-watching was common across all young people, Kjellgren said, not just behaviorally troubled youth.

"It could be different factors all influenced by each other," she said. "To watch a lot of porn, that could get you sexually occupied, or you could be very sexually occupied and you turn to lots of porn."

Sexual abusers also reported worse parental care, more aggression and alcohol consumption and more sexual partners than teens who didn't show any behavioral issues. They had also been victims of sexual assault themselves more frequently. However, sexually abusive teens did not show higher level of any of these factors than non-sexually abusive but otherwise troubled teenagers, so these risk factors were not specific to sexual abuse.

Kjellgren said that while the studies were on Scandinavian teens, she would expect to see similar results in other countries. Two U.S. surveys in 1996 and 1997 found that 0.8 percent and 1.3 percent of female ninth- and 12th-grade girls had ever forced someone to have sex.

The estimates in this study are likely conservative, Kjellgren said, as about 10 percent of Swedish youth have dropped out of school by the third year of high school. That's a relatively small drop-out rate compared with other nations, she said, but the 10 percent of kids who do drop out — and thus weren't included in this survey — are more likely to be troubled, and are more likely to be both victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse.

"I think this study just encourages us in Sweden and in other parts of the world to do further research on young people who sexually offend," Kjellgren said. "For a few individuals, this can be a starting point for being abusive more than once in life."

Earl Silverman says abuse by women deserves greater recognition

The province has ignored male victims of domestic violence and does not provide adequate resources for men looking to escape violent domestic situations, says a men’s rights advocate who’s heading to court to fight the issue.

Earl Silverman, who first launched a complaint against the province with the Human Rights Commission back in 2006, will appear before a judge at a judicial review Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Calgary Court of Queen’s Bench to hear if his complaint will come before the commission.

“All I know is there are male victims of domestic violence,” said Silverman. “There are not the same support services available to men as there are for women.

“We have explored the needs of women for such a long time, at the expense of ignoring men. At what point do we say we can put that on hold and start looking at men now?”

Silverman himself is a male victim of female perpetrated domestic violence, finally forced to leave his wife 20 years ago to get away from the abuse. Since that time, Silverman has started a helpline for men because there were no similar resources at the time and a few years ago, he opened the Men’s Alternative Safe House or MASH, to give men a shelter to escape violent domestic situations. Neither operation has been recognized by the provincial government to date.

The issue of male victims of domestic violence is still one of those dirty, little secrets amongst polite society, Silverman says.

“Men are not really provided with an option of asking for help,” he said. “Number one, men are not victims. Victim is sort of reserved for women. I want men to be recognized …[The groups involved] don’t want to admit there’s a problem. ”

Andrea Silverstone, co-chair of the Calgary Domestic Violence Committee and director of Peer Support Services for Abused Women, says while recent Statistics Canada numbers show only a .4 per cent difference in the perpetration of domestic violence between men and women, the actual day-to-day dealing of male victims remains quite low.

“Probably about 92 to 93 per cent of my practice are women who have experienced domestic violence and about 7 to 8 per cent are men who have experienced domestic violence. It definitely is a stark contrast,” Silverstone said.

“I’m not saying it’s not an issue. It’s for sure an issue, it’s just not an issue to the same degree that women claim family violence is an issue, or there’s not the same amount of men who need those supports and resources. But I’m saying for the number of men who need those supports and resources, I think that there is adequate resources in Calgary.”

Aaron Korneychuk, the interim male domestic abuse coordinator with the Calgary Counselling Centre says from what he’s seen, 20 per cent of all domestic abuse cases the centre handles involve male victims.

“But that’s not including unreported cases that I think increases the numbers on both sides for male and female victims,” he said. “It’s a big enough issue that needs more attention brought to it.”

Korneychuk added part of the problem with male victims of domestic violence is the social stigma men feel for admitting they have been assaulted.

“A lot of people don’t come out and say I’m a male victim…. I do think that there are men out there who are in abusive situations and they’re not getting the services they need,” he said. “Whether that could be from shame, from guilt, from just not thinking that there’s any services out there. The more men that come forward, the more that we’re gonna be able to expand these services.”

A spokeswoman with Alberta Human Services would not comment on the upcoming court case, but says there are now services for men to access if they find themselves in violent domestic situations.

“We certainly believe they need to access services just the same as any other victim,” said Christina Bruce. “We need to be providing that support, absolutely. And we do have a number of [services].”

Those services include a provincially-mandated helpline for all victims of domestic violence, online and print resources and a family violence facility in Strathmore that does permit men to take a bed in the co-ed shelter.

Bruce says the province’s statistics show a “fairly close” rate of female to male perpetrators of domestic violence.

“It is an emerging issue for sure and something that’s coming to light,” she said.

“There’s a bed for men but that’s only if a woman isn’t using it,” Silverman said. “There aren’t the support services there that are available to women. They are putting the processes together according to their previous agenda which is only to support women.”

Silverman added he has not seen much movement by the province or local service groups to fully address the ‘emerging issue’ of male victims of domestic violence.

“If that was so, I would imagine that Alberta Children’s Services would, rather than go to the judicial review and argue against me, they would say OK we agree. I have not seen any movement on the issue.”

Silverman’s first complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission was rejected and his subsequent appeal to the commissioner was denied in a written response, stating there was no demonstrative need for more services for abused men.

The judicial review on Wednesday will examine the facts of the case and determine how the commission came to their conclusion to deny hearing Silverman’s complaint.

“There are services, but it’s nowhere near as comprehensive as what the women’s shelters provide women,” Silverman said. “They may have one or two services, but that is not demonstrative of what men’s needs are. They don’t know what men’s needs are.

“They say they have support services, which is different than treatment. Treatment typically is anger management. They need support, whatever that may look like. And that’s not available for them right now. Men do it in a different way than women do it but it’s been put together all by women.”

The Verizon Protestors:ACTIVISTS among activists

The following is from the Santa Monica Daily Press:

About a week ago I received an invitation to a protest. Seems like I'm getting more invites to protests than parties this year, what with the Occupy hordes trying to get more people involved in various events. I find it ironic that now in my mid-40s, a time when I'm supposed to be driving a Corvette and dating 20-year-olds, I'm being asked to participate in the types of events that I skipped in my 20s.

One of the invitations I received was from Marc Angelucci, vice president of the National Coalition For Men. He was organizing an action Saturday in front of the Verizon store located at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and 16th Street. This was not some protest about the outrageous and deceitful sales tactics of a corporation — well, actually it kind of was. Verizon, in conjunction with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, produced an outrageous and deceitful video about domestic violence.

Domestic violence is a major hot topic. Emotions run exceedingly high, and people on all sides of the issue have very strong, deeply entrenched opinions about the causes, the treatments, and the ongoing damage it does to families, especially children.

I come from a family where there was a lot of domestic violence. As I like to say, the "Friday Night Fights" in our house were actually in our house. If the laws then were like they were today, I'm pretty certain I would have grown up in foster care, as more and more children do today.

So when the invite came from the National Coalition For Men to attend a protest "against Verizon's sexist, anti-father ads that depict all domestic violence as committed by men and fathers against women, and that says among children who witness it, the girls grow up to be victims while the boys grow up to be abusers," I had to attend.

What I found was a group of nine men, two boys and two women of mixed races and religions, who were holding signs that read "Stop Denying Domestic Violence Batters Men" and "Verizon Vilifies Fathers" and "Why Wont The Domestic Violence Industry Recognize Women Who Batter Men?" and "Honk 4 Dad's Rights" — which caused a ton of supportive honking, even by a Verizon FiOS van!

One of the protesters had a copy of the video on his iPhone and I was able to watch the ad. In it the stereotypes of an abusive father and victim mother and child were portrayed in an artsy, animated manner that would be very attractive to young, impressionable children's minds. I was appalled when I watched it because of its portrayal of the cycle of violence. Woman/girl as victim and man/boy as abuser.

The utter lack of balance, of an acknowledgment that women can be abusers also, saddened me because I grew up in a house where the woman was as much as an aggressor as the man. I know from personal experience that a woman is just as capable of domestic violence. I learned how to knife fight from my mom, not my dad. I learned how to shred a person's ego not in law school but from listening to my mom do it to my father. She would regularly call him a coward, then berate him when he got physical with her. It was a no-win situation. She would taunt and terrorize him and then fall back on her status as a woman as why he should not defend himself.

I regularly see the same thing today in my family law practice. Men who have been taunted and terrorized by their wives or girlfriends to the point of breaking, and when they eventually do, they are considered to be the abuser. If I say, "it is their own fault," most people agree with me, "a man should never hit a woman," but few are those who will stop and reconsider their logic, and realize that it is a form of "blaming the victim" when I say that. If a man has been pushed to the point of abuse, then he is the first victim in an abusive relationship. It's just that the abuse a woman perpetrates often leaves no visible marks.

Men are rarely considered to be victims in abusive households yet the Domestic Violence Protection Act considers "disturbing the peace" of the other occupant as a basis for a restraining order removing someone from their house with almost no notice. Which is how abusive women start with men, because men are likely to "just take it" or risk being called a coward by others, especially the police, who regularly ignore the pleas of men for help because they are not bleeding.

Most shelters wouldn't take men, which is why the coalition states in their press release they "had to sue the state of California for its widespread discrimination against male victims." The lawsuit resulted in an appellate decision holding that "domestic violence is a serious problem for both women and men," that excluding male victims "carries with it the baggage of sexual stereotypes," and that it is unconstitutional to exclude male victims of domestic violence from the statutory funding provisions or from state-funded services.

I applaud the coalition for their protest on Saturday and for forcing Verizon and the National Domestic Violence Hotline to remove a damaging video, and shedding light on a topic that too few people want to discuss honestly and openly.

Huge Victory In House -- Let's Slam The Senate

Holy moly. We did it -- at least for now. The House Judiciary Committee looked certain to vote for the Stop Online Piracy Act today. Instead, because of the work of so many rank-and-file Internet users, the bill's lead sponsor acknowledged that our concerns are legitimate, and adjourned the committee without holding a vote!

Here's Wired's take:

The House Judiciary Committee considering whether to send the Stop Online Piracy Act to the House floor abruptly adjourned Friday with no new vote date set – a surprise given that the bill looked certain to pass out of committee today.

It's amazing work: Politicians are, for the first time, having to contend with the Internet as a political force -- and we might actually win.

But now we need to focus attention back on the Senate, where Marjority Leader Harry Reid says the PROTECT IP Act will be the first bill he calls for a vote next year.

Will you let him and your Senators know that they need to stop pushing this legislation? It's an election year, and they don't want to do any heavy lifting. Pushing hard now could get them to back down altogether.

SOPA going down to the wire

Don't sacrifice your rights for the war on terror

You and I both know that freedom is not free. Its price cannot be measured in dollars - and its defense requires eternal vigilance.

On December 1, the U.S. Senate passed S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), by a vote of 93-7.

A slightly different NDAA, H.R. 1540, had already passed the U.S. House in May, and it has been reconciled with the Senate version in a closed session of a Joint Conference Committee.

The NDAA is passed annually to specify the budget and expenditures for the U.S. Department of Defense, but this year's version would essentially strip American Citizens of due process - protections that used to set us apart from despotic nations.

The Senate version of the NDAA declares the homeland to be part of the battlefield in the "War on Terror."

In simple terms, Sections 1031 and 1032 of S. 1867 allow American citizens to be detained indefinitely - without charges or trial - until the War on Terror is declared over.

There has been some recent confusion over what exactly the Senate bill actually stipulates.

In fact, when you call your representative and BOTH of your senators, as I'm about to ask you to do, the staff will probably give you one of two canned responses:

1.) "The Feinstein amendment #1456, which passed on Dec. 1 (by a vote of 99-1), says that no provision of Sec. 1031 can be taken to "affect existing law or authorities, relating to the detention of United States citizens."

In reality, this was added nearly unanimously at the last minute to appease those of us rightly opposed to these detention provisions. In the Congressional Record that day, there are arguments from Senators Lindsey Graham and Carl Levin, both of whom supported this amendment, stating they believe the President and Congress already have the authority to detain American Citizens, since the Supreme Court hasn't yet ruled otherwise. This is not the case, but it explains why the bill's main supporters did not oppose the Feinstein amendment.

2.) "It already exempts American Citizens. You should know that Sec. 1032 actually states: "The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States."

Don't fall for their cleverly chosen legislative language.

A careful reading of the suspect sections bears out that, while there is no requirement to detain an American citizen, the act thereof is not explicitly prohibited. By extension, it is actually permitted.

As if the above is not bad enough, the power to determine which American citizens will be indefinitely detained without charges or trial will be left to the President alone.

I'm certain you would agree that something as important as overturning longstanding American jurisprudence deserves to be the subject of a vigorous debate in a public forum.

But, late last week, the House, by an overwhelming majority (406-17), passed a motion that allowed this Joint Committee to meet in secret.

Last night, the House and Senate conferees emerged without having changed the offending detainee provisions of the NDAA.

And the section numbers (formerly 1031 and 1032) have been changed to 1021 and 1022.

A vote on the conference report could come as early as this Wednesday in the House of Representatives!

So I need your members of Congress to know where you stand immediately!

It is imperative you contact your representative and both of your senators today to urge them to vote NO on the NDAA (H.R. 1540/S. 1867) Conference Report unless Secs. 1021 and 1022 are removed or modified to explicitly exclude all U.S. citizens and lawful resident aliens.

Here at C4L, we've been getting a wide range of questions from our members about what happened in the Senate during the fight over S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and what the current status of the bill is.

Legislative battles are often fast-paced fights where details are changing minute-to-minute. Unfortunately, the internet doesn't always help clear things up because many political reporters who think they have a grasp of what is occurring, don't, and they unintentionally mislead people. To help clear things up, we'll start with the most recent, and work our way back, then finish up with where the bill is now.

To begin, the Senate passed the NDAA on Thursday Dec. 1, by a vote of 93-7. This is not the end of the fight. The House passed a different version, H.R. 1540, near the end of May. Both versions will now end up in a joint House/Senate conference where differences will be hammered out, but more on that at the end.

On Friday, Dec. 2nd, C4L's Vice President, Matt Hawes sent around an email describing an amendment to S. 1867 that would have allowed the military to keep an individual locked up even after they had been tried and found NOT GUILTY until after the conclusion of the "War on Terror." Senator Paul helped defeat the amendment, S.A. 1274, by a vote of 41-59, just by calling for a roll call vote on Thursday night.

What you won't see from looking at the roll call vote on S.A. 1274, is that Senators Carl Levin, John McCain, and members of both parties had agreed to allow the amendment to pass by voice vote, but when forced to record Yea or Nay next to their name, the majority voted against it.

Next, we move back to last Thursday afternoons vote on Senate Amendments (S.A.) 1125 & 1126. Campaign for Liberty urged a "YES" vote on both of these amendments.

S.A. 1125 would have clarified that military requirement to detain individuals only applies to those captured overseas by adding the word "abroad" after "captured" in Section 1032 of S. 1867. This amendment failed by a vote of 45-55.

S.A. 1126 would have amended Section 1031 of S. 1867 to clearly state that the authority to detain individuals does not confer any authority of the military to detain American citizens without trial until the end of hostilities. This amendment also failed by a vote of 45-55.

Now, it's important to make something very clear here. We've received a number of messages from well-intentioned folks who contacted us saying something like, "But, Section 1032 already says it doesn't apply to U.S. Citizens, you're making a fight where there isn't one and really just being used as pawns in the ACLU's liberal agenda..."

I cannot stress this enough (nor can I express how many times I responded to it by email, phone, and private message) -- don't be fooled by Section 1032, Subsection (b) on "Applicability to United States Citizens and Lawful Resident Aliens."

Despite what a straight-forward reading of the text would appear to say, that the "requirement to detain a person" does not apply to U.S. Citizens and Lawful Resident Aliens this is just cleverly worded political-speak to deceive the American people. Just because they aren't "required" doesn't mean they aren't allowed.

With all that cleared up (hopefully clear as glass rather than mud) let's look at where we're at now.

The National Defense Authorization Act, (H.R. 1540/S. 1867) is now in a conference committee squaring the differences between the House and the Senate version. The House passed a motion that allows them to hold the meetings for this important conference committee behind closed doors. Arguments pertaining to something as important as overturning the Posse Comitatus Act and Habeus Corpus deserve to be heard in a public forum.

We are all being watched
“I am not placing you under arrest, but I have some questions and I am going to read you your rights.”

That was the first thing the prominent Canadian MRA, whom we must now refer to as Mr. X, was told when he walked into the police investigators office. He had been phoned at work the day before by police officials, who told X that an allegation had been made against him that involved the MRM, stockpiling weapons and threats to do harm. They asked him to come in to “answer some questions.”

Those questions were largely about his personal life and beliefs, focusing on whether he was a violence prone individual. There were questions about the MRM and MRA’s, and it became clear to him during the course of the interview that significant prior effort had been invested by police officials into studying his beliefs as well as the overall mentality of those in the movement.

He admits to being a little rattled. Making threats of violence of any kind is a very serious matter in Canada. And something like this coming nearly to the day on the anniversary of the “Montreal Massacre,” was a bit more chilling. December 6 marks the day that Marc Lepine murdered fourteen women and wounded ten women and four men at the École Polytechnique, an engineering school affiliated with the University of Montréal.

Anyone, and this includes police officials, who has read Mr. X’s blog articles or watched his YouTube videos, knows him to be a level headed, intellectual sort, not given to violence. But it is clear that someone reported otherwise to Canadian law enforcement. The question remains why, but that is likely to never be answered because he was not made privy to where the complaint originated.

He was informed, according to my conversation with him last night, that he was not a suspect and the police found nothing in his writings that caused them concern. They were, in effect, following up on a complaint and after speaking with him determined there was no need for further inquiry. So they said.

But even in the best case scenario, there is an object lesson in the thick of this that must be addressed. The men’s movement is a growing phenomenon. We are, as were we destined to do, starting to scare some people. That is what happens when insight meets ignorance. Those who cling to the status quo, in this case feminist governance, get uncomfortable. They react. Over react. Although over reaction may be the wrong word. These people were full of hate and lies long before anyone started speaking back.

It is possible that this was orchestrated, that more than one person conspired to set our associate up for trouble. It is also possible that this was one reactive person acting on their own. Again, we will never know.

But we do know enough to know that for MRA’s, especially those that live in Canada, that there is a need, not for panic, but for caution.

We are documenting the fact that these events transpired for the sake of public record. If other MRA’s are called in and questioned in similar circumstances we will document that as well. On the outside chance that we are seeing the police manipulated into some sort of ideological McCarthyism, we want to document it as it happens.

Regarding AVfM, there have been times when I have banned people from this site for making even non serious suggestions of violence. I have gotten complaints and nasty emails for doing so. Now you know at least one reason why I felt it was necessary.

Personally, I would be flabbergasted to know there are any MRA’s out there that would take their beliefs and use them as an excuse for violence. And truth tell, I am more than happy with their being removed from our ranks, and even from society, if they are out there.

The only weapon we ever needed is the truth, and I do believe that we can see through Mr.X’s unfortunate experience, that the truth is indeed a potent weapon that causes irrational reactions from the very people we would identify as the problem.

But a word of caution. As we know all too well, lies are powerful weapons, too. They can take a terrible toll in terms of lost reputation, as even lost freedom. Unfortunate then that our stock and trade is in dealing with liars. We see people like David Futrelle and others trying to cast us as pro-violence in any way they possibly can, often treating the truth and integrity like minor obstacles to their ambitions.

So, the question becomes, how are we going to react to what has happened here? The answer is that we are going to move ahead full steam. We won’t slither into private forums with our beliefs. That is the province of those we oppose, as you will soon see detailed on the pages of this site like never before.

Just like Mr. X, the people at AVfM are simply telling the truth and looking for justice. There is no need to slow down or change course. But these events remind us that on whatever level you can imagine, there are those that would do most anything to shut us up. Or, as we have said around here before, we are getting flak, so we must be over the target.

But, it is official now, people. They are watching us. We must remain aware of that, even though it changes nothing that we do. AVfM will continue to enforce its no violence policy, just as we have from the day we launched. And we will continue to confront hateful ideologues, corrupt public officials and the plague of misandry wherever we find it and FTSU.

Sometimes the ride will get bumpy, so we are all better off to strap in securely.

Some mornings, going through my email is just part of my usual routine. Then, other mornings, like today, someone sends an email that elicits a huge smile and just makes my whole day.

Ben Vonderheide aka Daddy Justice, is a relentless men’s and father’s rights activist. He and his video camera have been holding corrupt public officials and the corrupt family court system and its minions accountable for almost a decade.

Mr. Vonderheide’s fight began 8 years ago when his ex made false allegations of abuse against him in an effort to separate him from his child. He fought back and won and now he is fighting the good fight for countless other men and their children.

In July 2011, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was up for renewal in the U.S. Senate. Dr. Phil McGraw and other mucky-mucks in the $4 billion dollar plus Women’s Domestic Violence industry offered up their usual misinformation, lies and inaccurate statistics in order to have the act renewed.

After Dr. Phil lied spoke to the Senate, Mr. Vonderheide was waiting for him in the hallway with his camera.

Dr. Phil ignored Mr. Vonderheide, but other hearing participants did not.

The woman who assaults Mr. Vonderheide in the above video is Lisalyn R. Jacobs. Ms. Jacobs is the current vice president for government relations of Legal Momentum, NOW attorney and one of the individuals responsible for implementing the highly discriminatory and unconstitutional VAWA legislation. She began her legal career at the National Partnership for Women and Families under the auspices of Georgetown’s Women’s Law & Public Policy Fellowship. Following three years in private practice, she joined the Office of Policy Development of the U.S. Justice Department in 1995 and worked on a number of issues including implementation of the Violence Against Women Act, the welfare reform law, judicial nominations. and affirmative action.

She also served as Chief of Staff of the Civil Rights Division, as well as Special Counsel to the Director of the Violence Against Women Office. In May of 2000, she left DOJ and for nearly three years was a civil and human rights consultant on issues ranging from capital punishment to affirmative action, and international human rights. She has testified before congressional committees at both the state and federal levels.

On December 5, 2011, Lisalyn R. Jacobs was charged and arraigned for assaulting Ben Vonderheide (Daddy Justice) outside the U.S. Senate VAWA hearing in Washington, D.C.

One would think that an individual who is against violence, who has devoted most of her adult professional life to ending violence and promoting human rights, would know better than to assault another human being in the corridors of the United States Senate for doing nothing more than filming her and asking her questions in an effort to hold her accountable for her very public beliefs and role in creating discriminatory and unconstitutional legislature.

Ms. Jacobs believes violence against women and girls is wrong. Her actions, however, seem to indicate that female perpetrated violence against men is right and acceptable and the Orwellian belief that some humans are more equal than others.

I could go on and on about what a hypocrite Ms. Jacobs appears to be. I could point out how a violent female offender shouldn’t be allowed to participate in any discussions or policy-making about the violence of men and the protection of women. I could say all these things and more.

Instead, I think I’ll go back to enjoying my schadenfreude-gasm at seeing this kind of hypocrisy exposed.

Hillary Clinton is anti-censorship when it comes to the net

It's official;hell just froze over. It appears that Hillary Clinton and I are in agreement that internet freedom is a right to be enjoyed by all American adults. Here is what I mean,from Demand Progress:

We sure weren't expecting it: Yesterday Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a truly visionary speech about Internet freedom -- about the human right to a free Internet.

It culminated in these profound words about how governments should engage with the Internet: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Some forces in the Obama administration support Internet freedom. Others want to ram through the Internet censorship bills backed by Hollywood, Big Pharma, and the Chamber of Commerce. As our government considers instituting its own Internet censorship regime, we need to support those who stand with us. Let Clinton -- and her boss, Obama -- know that we stand with her sentiments: They need to keep the Internet free.

NCFM to teach Verizon a lesson

Los Angeles – 12/4/11 – The National Coalition For Men (NCFM) Los Angeles chapter will be protesting and handing out flyers on Saturday, 12/10/11 at 2:00 PM outside Verizon at 2530 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, corner of Wilshire & 26th St., against Verizon’s sexist, anti-father ads that depict all domestic violence as committed by men and fathers against women, and that says among children who witness it, the girls grow up to be victims while the boys grow up to be abusers. NCFM and SAVE have asked Verizon to withdraw or change the sexist ad, but they refused, and in response they cite crime data showing far more women than men are victims.

To begin with, when we mention soldiers in Iraq, we say “men and women” regardless of the fact that over 90% of them are men. That’s to make sure the minority are not excluded. Why aren’t domestic violence victims given the same respect? There is a 40-year history of the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), which co-sponsored this ad, addressing this issue in a way that leaves male victims and their children invisible as usual. NCFM had to sue the State of California for its widespread discrimination against male victims. The lawsuit resulted in an appellate decision holding that “domestic violence is a serious problem for both women and men,” that excluding male victims “carries with it the baggage of sexual stereotypes,” and that it is unconstitutional to exclude male victims of domestic violence from the statutory funding provisions or from state-funded services. And the crime data they cite is not accurate. The police data shows about 25% of police calls now come from men. But since men are less likely to report it, the oft-cited crime data from the Department of Justice is not reliable. By contrast, virtually all of the randomized surveys show women initiate DV at least as often as men, and men suffer 1/3 of the physical injuries, as Cal State University Professor Martin Fiebert shows in his online bibliography at click here. A 32-nation study by the University of New Hampshire found women are as violent and controlling as men in dating relationships worldwide. See: click here and click here

The Centers for Disease Control recently funded a major study of heterosexual relationships throughout the U.S. and found: “Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases,” and both sexes suffered significant injuries. See: click here

The same study also found: “More women than men (25% versus 11%) were responsible. In fact, 71 percent of the instigators in nonreciprocal partner violence were women” and “while injury was more likely when violence was perpetrated by men, in relationships with reciprocal violence it was the men who were injured more often (25% of the time) than were women (20% of the time).” See here

When children witness either parent hit the other, regardless of how severe or minor, it becomes a model for them to follow. Domestic violence is an intergenerational cycle, and we’ll never stop that cycle without being honest about it rather than covering up half of it out of political correctness.

Legislation would give miltary the right to patrol the streets

Ask Obama To Veto Indefinite Military Detention of AMERICAN CITIZENS

An unimaginable violation of due process: The Senate just voted to allow the military to detain American citizens indefinitely -- without even charging them with a crime -- if they are said to be suspected of terrorism.

As Senator Dianne Feinstein put it, "Congress is essentially authorizing the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens, without charge" if the bill passes as it's currently written.

Thankfully, President Obama has threatened to veto the bill, noting that:

Applying this military custody requirement to individuals inside the United States, as some Members of Congress have suggested is their intention, would raise serious and unsettled legal questions and would be inconsistent with the fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets.

Obama will only have a few days to make up his mind: Will you urge him to make good on his veto threat? Just fill out the form at right.

SAVE takes on Verizon

The Verizon Foundation has produced a frightening video titled Monsters. The video's perverse message can be summed up in this slide: "She's afraid of her dad."

The video revels in powerful yet destructive stereotypes: fathers as abusers, wives as victims, and young boys as future abusers. The video tells the impressionable viewer:

The TSA is 10 years old and still groping

Everyone’s “favorite” bureaucracy is growing up.

Today marks 10 years since the TSA’s creation.

And if I could make a birthday wish on their behalf...

... it would be that this is the last holiday season we have to put up with their poking, groping, and scanning.

In what should be “the most wonderful time of the year,” the path home for many Americans begins with a long wait at the airport – and dealing with people who think a government ID gives them the right to put their hands where they don’t belong.

Remember the joyous, exciting holiday travel of yesteryear?

“Over the river and through the woods…”

Well, no one will be writing Christmas carols about modern holiday travel – though we may hear some blues about how miserable the experience can be.

Since its inception, perhaps no other agency has been more flagrant in its violations of our civil liberties and as flippant toward Americans’ constitutionally protected rights as the TSA.

As you may remember, in March of 2009, a C4L staffer found himself temporarily detained and interrogated by the TSA after attempting to fly back after our first Regional Conference with the event’s proceeds in his carry-on.

It’s not illegal to fly with cash and checks on domestic flights, but these agents made it their business – something the TSA does far too often to too many people.

Since that time, the situation has only gotten worse.

For the past year, the TSA has been installing potentially dangerous backscatter imaging machines across the country to perform virtual strip searches on airline passengers.

This leaves passengers the “option” of either being scanned and possibly exposed to dangerous radiation or enduring the very public humiliation of receiving one of their infamous “pat-downs.”

When the policy was first implemented, Senator Claire McCaskill downplayed the invasive groping that makes up one of the TSA’s “enhanced pat-downs,” referring to them as “love pats.”

The senator apparently no longer feels that way (after selling her private jet), and she recently complained about their invasiveness to TSA Administrator John Pistole.

"I try to avoid a pat-down at all costs," McCaskill told Pistole. "There are many times women put their hands on me in a way that if it was your daughter or your sister or your wife, you would be upset."

And as people continue to make their mistreatment and abuse at the TSA’s hands public by sharing their stories online, more members of Congress are beginning to take notice.

Others, unfortunately, still don’t see the bigger picture.

Without immediately reining in the unaccountable TSA and eliminating their procedures of scanning and groping passengers at the airports, I’m afraid the situation will only continue to get worse.

In the past, we’ve warned about the TSA’s plans to expand its scanning beyond our nation’s airports – to our highways, train stations, and bus stops.

Unfortunately, this is already happening.

Last month in Tennessee, the TSA’s VIPR teams were deployed to conduct random searches of vehicles on the highways.

This has to stop.

And you and I are the ones who can fight back.

Members of Congress may think this issue has blown over, but it’s up to Campaign for Liberty to remind them that we’re more outraged than ever at what’s taking place every day in our airports.

Please, as soon as you can on Monday, call Congress at 202-224-3121 and demand they rein in their Frankenstein creation.

Don’t let them sell you a bill of goods, either.

They can force the TSA to abandon their policies of scanning passengers (in what amounts to a virtual strip search) or groping them (in a manner that would constitute sexual assault were it coming from a regular individual).

Ultimately, Congress should abolish the TSA altogether and return the responsibility for security to the private sector.

Just like other federal government overreaches, the TSA believes telling us this is necessary for “our safety” allows it to do whatever it wants, including shredding our Fourth Amendment rights.

We must expose this lie, and I hope we’ll have your help to do so.

The responsibility for airline security lies with the airline industry in the first place.

Since 9/11, only alert passengers and flight crews have thwarted additional terrorist attacks on airplanes, not the TSA!

Tell Congress to pass appropriate, common-sense legislation like H.R. 2438, the “American Traveler Dignity Act,” and to cut off funding for the maintenance of existing scanners and implementation of new ones.

Even the European Union has banned the use of these scanners because of the possible health risks!

So please, reach out to Congress as soon as you can on Monday at 202-224-3121 and urge them to rein in the TSA by outlawing their scanning and groping.

Chivalry:nature vs nuture

I've heard the argument that men are hard-wired to be chivalrous toward women thus protecting them but I wondering if that is all bunk. If being chivalrous is hard-wired such as breathing is then why do MRA's exist? If the preceding is fact it would be impossible to be an MRA because men would not be able to resist being chivalrous anymore than they can resist breathing. Also take into consideration it is women who condition the young boy to grow up to embrace chivalry,often through repeated reinforcement. When the young boy cannot or will not acquiesces to their demands then they shame him to make him comply and it is through their shaming that they reinforce chivalry. The conclusion we come to is that chivalry is a form of subservience rather than a form of power. We may look at the man guarding the woman (white knighting) and conclude that since he is physically stronger he has the power. What very few people do is realize that the woman in question may have used manipulation (reward/shame) tap his "protect women" programming that was propagated to him when he was a child. So let's take a look at it again: the man is guarding the woman and some will say he has the power. Others will say she goaded a stranger to fight her battles for her and she has the power. Who really has the power: the overt or the covert? Let me put it this way: Who has the most chance of getting injured or kill? Who has the best chance of walking away without a scratch? That should tell you who has the power.

The death of due process at Brown University

The following comes from John The Other from a A Voice For Men in which he talks about the death of due process at Brown University. I guess Brown views its female population as pure angels that must be protected from its male population which it views as sex crazed fiends who unable to control their impulses:

Brown University is a private, Ivy League university located in Providence, Rhode Island. It’s also where the school’s faculty and administration have endorsed the eradication of due process – and where the school’s newspaper, the Brown Daily Herald printed the following statement.

“You need to check your behavior carefully before you enter into a relationship with a woman. There will be no due process if you are accused of rape. The woman’s version of what happened will always be accepted over the man’s account.”[1]

Do I need to keep writing, or is that enough?

For context, I’ve included the fifth and sixth amendments of the Bill of Rights.

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

Do not skip over those two short paragraphs. Please don’t simply bypass them, because without them, the only redress of accusation, injury or grievance devolves to the use of force, the jurisprudence of a mob, or a vendetta.

The ideology driving the “thinking” at universities like Brown has gone beyond being a parody of itself and has crossed deep into the territory of Kantian nightmare.

I hesitate to call this feminism – although I know it is that victim cult taken to a logical extreme by blind progression without opposition. What I don’t hesitate to call it is stupid, hate-driven bigotry on par with the set-of-mind which led in recent history to late-night lynchings. It is the most craven abdication of ethics by academicians, and were it not happening now, a parody containing such events would be rejected as too absurd.

I have written many times that human society, in the absence of a viable system for nonviolent redress of grievance – such as the due process of law – will always adapt an alternative system of redress. The simplest such alternative being retributive violence. Im am surely not uniquely prescient to see this. Academicians at institutions like Brown University cannot possibly be so stupid they fail to grasp this simple concept.

For the moment, I will setting predictions of upheaval aside. A student, or parent who reads the words published by the Brown Daily Herald, and sees the school as anything but a free-fire zone where young lives are destroyed must be equally stupid.

A university is a business, it sells a service. The students of a university are the customers. They’re the ones who buy the university’s product.

Male students : you have just been told that a business you pay, that you are customers of – this business will cheerfully ignore the law. That this business will constitute its own laws along lines of sexual ideology, and that you have no rights should you ever be accused of by any female customer of the business.

There will be no due process if you are accused of rape.

Brown University used to be a private, Ivy League university located in Providence, Rhode Island. Now it is a private fiefdom run along the lines of a female supremacist victim cult. If you are male, and you attend this school, then you may simply be too stupid to help, and your life’s purpose may be to serve as a warning to others.

you are culpable.

If you are female, and you attend this school, and you say nothing, and do nothing, and sit quietly as your institute of higher learning pursues the policies of sexual apartheid, you are culpable.

Following the lead set at Brown University, the future is not a feminist utopia of women carried in gilded thrones on the backs of chained men. Utopian dreams are always false. What’s coming has the shape of a mad-max future of wastelands, and universal application of the warlord model of local government. Unfortunately, before we arrive at any outcome so sunny, cities will burn, and bodies will litter the streets. This is not a threat, nor a promise. Despite what detractors of men’s rights writing in general, and my writing in particular say, I have no sympathy for violence. America has been the most prosperous and affluent cultures in history, and when the great dream becomes the failed state, it will be very ugly indeed.

But don’t worry ladies, that bad outcome could be as much as 50 years away. Lots of time for somebody else to solve the problem.

Back in the present, graduates of Ivy League schools tend to a degree of pride on the subject of their alma matter, and even now – this is justified. Post baccalaureate degrees can be a draining program of lost sleep and hard work. However, there’s not much of altruism in attaining academic credentials, people do this for their own benefit, as they should.

I had intended to include and then examine a quotation from the Russian novelist Tolstoy.

“All that is required for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing”

The Russian didn’t say so, but his good men includes good women. I’m not convinced either animal exists, except as defined in each moment by their acts. However, in the context of animals doing nothing, there’s reason to examine the pride of an ivy league graduate, whose framed papers adorn their office wall.

Humans tend to be obtuse when faced by their own inaction – so Ill state this again in explicit terms. If you are a female student or staff of Brown University, and you benefit from a female-favouring climate while your alma mater discards the human rights of men, you are culpable. It will not be forgotten.

The Russian was famously verbose in his work, but I’ll leave just one more comment of his.

I sit on a man’s back, choking him, and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by any means possible, except getting off his back.

Did Brown Force Out An Innocent Freshman, Or Let A Rapist Go Free?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — William McCormick III crossed the wrought-iron gates of Brown University on a full scholarship, a champion wrestler from Wisconsin who expected four years at an Ivy League institution known for educating generations of bright and enterprising minds.

He lasted mere weeks.

In September 2006, he was accused of stalking, harassing and ultimately raping a female acquaintance – allegations he says are false. The accuser was a third-generation legacy student who, when first reporting trouble with McCormick, also mentioned that her father was an "alum and a big supporter of Brown."

The day after the rape allegations were made, McCormick was called into a meeting with administrators, barred from campus and put on a flight home pending a disciplinary hearing.

The following month, McCormick was gone for good.

Before the hearing, he signed a confidential agreement – under pressure, he says, from a lawyer for the accuser's family – in which he agreed to withdraw from Brown. In exchange, the accuser agreed to let the matter drop.

A Brown administrator agreed to reflect on his transcript that he had withdrawn for "medical reasons" but also told him he was ineligible for readmission, even though he had never been found responsible for rape. McCormick transferred to Bucknell University, which says he's a student in good standing.

The school allowed the matter to be closed through a private contract instead of a traditional fact-finding hearing that could have vindicated McCormick or established that an assault had actually occurred. The arrangement was meant to provide a tidy outcome to a dispute fraught with emotion and wildly divergent accounts.

Brown insists it acted properly. But a federal lawsuit from McCormick and e-mails reviewed by The Associated Press raise messy questions about the handling of the case.

The lawsuit alleges that administrators failed to adequately investigate the accusations, and permitted a blameless student to be railroaded from campus to placate a major donor.

There is another possibility, though – that Brown administrators deemed the allegations credible but allowed the complaint to be quietly disposed of, freeing someone accused of rape to wipe the slate clean as he transferred to another school.

Will McCormick is, by all accounts, a physically imposing man.

Six-foot-five, more than 250 pounds and a force on the wrestling mat, he went 43-0 and was a state champion in his senior year at Milwaukee's Heritage Christian School. He was bulky but also bookish, more focused on making the honor roll than on partying or flirting with girls, recalled teammate J.P. Janik.

The Waukesha, Wis., native was accepted early decision at Brown. Among his early residence hall acquaintances was a freshman from an affluent, suburban New York City background – an accomplished student who in high school helped establish a charity. Her father was in finance, a Brown alumnus and generous donor to and fundraiser for the school.

The AP generally does not identify people who say they were sexually assaulted, and is not naming the family to avoid identifying the woman.

His lawyer says the relationship was friendly, though not romantic. It soured quickly.

On Sept. 5, 2006, the first day of classes and one week after orientation, the woman and her roommate approached their resident adviser – a fellow student – to complain that McCormick was acting "creepy" and following her around. At 2 the next morning, the adviser spoke with Carla Hansen, an associate dean of student life.

The young woman said McCormick was telling people they were dating when they weren't, calling her up to 20 times a day and once punched a wall in anger and made a threatening remark – "I could have hurt you" – after seeing her hug another guy, Hansen wrote administrators in a Sept. 6 e-mail recapping the allegations.

In court papers, McCormick's lawyer, J. Scott Kilpatrick, calls the accusations "exaggerations and half-truths" without responding to specific allegations. McCormick, himself, refused to be interviewed for this story.

The student spoke with Hansen later in the morning of Sept. 6, refusing to name her alleged stalker for fear of getting him into trouble. She also referenced her father, though it's unclear why.

"She said that her father was an alum and a big supporter of Brown, and that she wanted to love Brown, too, and did not want to have anything bad happen to this other student," Hansen wrote in the e-mail.

Conversations between Hansen, the accuser and the resident adviser continued throughout the day.

The student spoke that afternoon with a campus victim rights' advocate, and later that evening, asked to temporarily drop the matter so she could study and attend a friend's birthday party.

That night, she spoke to her father, who urged her to identify her alleged stalker – which she did. At 10 p.m., the father also called the home of Brown administrator Russell Carey, according to an e-mail from Carey.

The following day, McCormick was formally barred from contacting her. She was directed to avoid him, as well.

Soon new problems arose.

A Sept. 13 e-mail to administrators from the student's resident adviser accuses McCormick of having violated the no-contact order by visiting the woman's room and trying to speak with her.

But for the first time, the e-mail – sent to various administrators – also describes an encounter the woman said had occurred on Sept. 6. the day after she first complained to her RA.

On that evening, she said, William McCormick entered her room as her friends were at dinner. As she tried to study, she said, he forced her onto the bed, pushed her up against a wall, tore through her boxer shorts and raped her.

She complained of bruising and sore ribs.

After word of the e-mail circulated, Michael Burch, the then-assistant wrestling coach who acted as McCormick's adviser throughout the process, was told by the head coach to pick McCormick up at his dorm and host him for the night.

Burch served him a glass of orange juice, told him they would straighten out the matter in the morning and gave up his bed so McCormick – who would tell Burch he was never even alone in the same room with the woman – could rest for what figured to be a difficult day ahead.

"I remember walking by my room and just seeing him laying in my bed, with his eyes wide open and staring at the ceiling," Burch said. "He was really scared, really terrified."

On Sept. 14, Burch accompanied McCormick to a meeting with administrators, where he was told he was accused of "sexual misconduct" – on top of earlier harassment charges. A letter from Margaret Klawunn, dean of student life, said he was barred from campus, effective immediately and until further notice.

"This action has been taken for your best interests and that of the community," Klawunn wrote.

Brown administrators involved in the case either didn't return messages or declined comment.

University spokeswoman Marisa Quinn wouldn't discuss specifics but cited Brown policy allowing for students to be immediately suspended if they're considered a danger. She said the university is obligated to act when there's evidence of potential harm to a student.

Brown says students are presumed not responsible for disciplinary violations until their hearing. But Burch said McCormick was denied a chance to explain himself. An administrator pulled out a plane ticket, and Burch accompanied McCormick in a van to the airport.

He was put on a plane to Wisconsin.

Brown faced national scrutiny nearly 15 years ago in its handling of another sexual dispute that roiled the campus.

Two students had sex after a party. The female student, a freshman, later said she was too drunk to consent and accused the young man of rape. She spoke out at a rally, while his supporters said he was unfairly branded a rapist over unsubstantiated allegations. Critics accused the Brown disciplinary process of bias against men.

The accused student was put on probation and temporarily left school, later suing his accuser and Brown and reaching a confidential settlement.

Accusations of sexual assault on college campuses, historically, pose thorny issues for administrators. The accuser and accused can present irreconcilable versions; alleged victims often don't want to involve police or pursue a campus complaint; and a civil disciplinary hearing can be an ill-suited forum for dealing with criminal accusations.

In McCormick's case, Brown considered the allegations credible enough to immediately suspend him but says it followed the accuser's wishes in not calling the police. Though college administrators say they routinely defer to self-identified victims on involving law enforcement, the judge hearing McCormick's lawsuit said he was troubled police weren't called.

"The thought that with all of the people involved in this matter at different levels, a determination is made to not tell law enforcement, even the Brown Police – I'm having trouble getting that," U.S. District Judge William Smith said at an April hearing.

Brown, like most colleges, affords disciplinary hearings for students accused of campus violations. But the agreement McCormick reached with his accuser short-circuited the traditional disciplinary process.

Gary Pavela, academic integrity director at Syracuse University who consults with colleges on disciplinary issues, says such agreements shouldn't be the end of an accusation. He said regardless of police involvement, and even independent of the wishes of the accuser and the accused, universities must get to the bottom of sexual assault allegations to determine if a crime occurred on campus or, conversely, if a student has been falsely accused.

A hearing could even be conducted after a student has left campus.

A college's philosophy, Pavela said, should be, "Once you brought it to our attention, we're going to investigate it as best as we can even if you don't pursue it."

Not necessarily, says Scott Coffina, a Philadelphia lawyer who advises colleges on campus security issues, arguing that there's no need to hold a hearing for an accused student after he or she leaves and when the accuser no longer wants to press the issue. "If they're gone, there's not really a case to bring."

Burch, the coach and adviser, began preparing for McCormick's hearing after McCormick left campus. He requested the accuser's phone logs to see how she spent the day and evening of the alleged rape, but says he never got them.

He asked for a police report, but there was none.

In one e-mail, he complained he wasn't allowed to see the boxer shorts the accuser said she was wearing during the alleged rape and that he couldn't take DNA testing or fingerprints. An administrator said the boxers wouldn't be entered as evidence – but that references to them were fair game at the hearing.

As the month progressed, Burch said he and the McCormicks grew concerned that McCormick wouldn't get a fair shake, convinced the accuser's father had the ear of the administration. The father, as an alumnus, donor and parent, has over time "been periodically in contact with Brown administrators," a lawyer for the university wrote in court papers.

E-mails from Burch reflect growing frustration, even anger, with the process, as he accused administrators of stonewalling efforts to gather evidence and of failing to help make McCormick's classmates available for questioning.

"I am doing my best to advocate for a student who has been put at a tremendous disadvantage in this hearing process responding to charges that carry with it the possibility of a life sentence in prison. I trust you understand how William and his family must be feeling at this time," Burch wrote in a Sept. 28 e-mail to administrators.

Afraid the accuser might seek criminal charges if he returned to campus, or that he might be labeled a rapist or denied a proper defense at a disciplinary hearing, McCormick sought alternatives.

His family's attention turned toward an arrangement, negotiated between the accuser's lawyer and their own attorney, that would close the case and permit McCormick to withdraw while maintaining his innocence.

The agreement presented to McCormick required him to leave school immediately.

He would agree not to return to Providence for as long as she lived there – unless it was for a wrestling competition with whatever new college he planned to attend.

She would agree to drop the matter.

Both would agree not to speak disparagingly of each other or discuss the deal outside their families.

McCormick signed the contract even as he wavered on the terms. He wrote his lawyer, Walter Stone, on Oct. 4 – the day he signed the contract in Wisconsin – to express reservations.

"This is a huge decision for me to make, and I need more time to consider, reconsider, and then go over everything again to make sure that I make the best possible decision regarding this matter," he wrote.

"There has been an awful lot of pressure put on me throughout this whole process, and for once, I would like to have the full perspective to properly make a decision of my own."

The message was forwarded to Joseph Cavanagh, the lawyer for the accuser's family, who replied the next day that it would be "unconscionable" for McCormick to attempt to renege on the deal.

He said the disciplinary hearing would proceed without a signed agreement, then in a follow-up e-mail, made what the McCormicks interpreted as a thinly veiled threat of possible criminal charges.

"The resolution we worked out would be exactly what he would need to give him the best chance to move forward with his life," Cavanagh wrote Stone. "I can only hope that you are able to persuade him and his family of what a mistake this is. As you well know, the Brown disciplinary matter is the least of his possible perils."

The contract was returned for the accuser's signature.

Cavanagh has declined to comment, other than to say that his client maintains she was raped.

Around the same time, Burch asked administrators if they had sent McCormick, who suffers from seizures, paperwork for his requested medical leave.

A Brown administrator, Robert Samuels, replied: "My understanding is that there is an agreement being made between the parties involved that supercedes (sic) any and all other processes."

On Oct. 18, McCormick wrote Brown to withdraw for medical reasons "due to the stresses caused me while I was a student at Brown." He said he would not return, a condition of the contract with his accuser.

Though colleges generally allow students withdrawing for medical reasons to return when their condition improves, McCormick was not offered that opportunity.

"Given the circumstances of your initial separation from the University," replied Klawunn, the dean of student life, "you will not be eligible for readmission to the University. Per your request we will have your transcript reflect that you withdrew for medical reasons with an effective date of Oct. 13, 2006."

William McCormick enrolled in 2007 at Bucknell, where he wrestled until being sidelined by injuries. An English major, he just completed his junior year.

Federal education privacy laws permit but do not require disclosure of disciplinary information about transfer students to their new school.

Bucknell Dean of Students Susan Hopp said she has no record Brown notified Bucknell of the rape allegations.

Bucknell wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger said he didn't know the circumstances behind McCormick's departure until he received a vague anonymous phone call during McCormick's first year from someone opining as to what might have happened. Even then, Wirnsberger said, he made only minimal inquiry.

"He just said, `It's a personal, private matter that I'd like to keep personal and private,'" Wirnsberger recalled. "And I said, 'I totally respect that.'"

McCormick sued last fall, before the three-year statute of limitations expired, alleging the school failed to follow its own disciplinary policies, bent to the influences of a donor and failed to conduct an investigation that could have vindicated him.

Brown President Ruth Simmons told AP the allegations are "utter poppycock" but declined further comment.

A judge in April whittled the case down considerably, dismissing individual Brown administrators from the case, but left in claims of breach of contract, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress against the university. The accuser, a member of Brown's 2010 graduating class, and her father also remain defendants.

Nearly four years after McCormick left Brown under the cloud of rape allegations, the lawsuit represents an opportunity for him to start clearing his name, his lawyer, Kilpatrick, wrote in court papers. Though of course the case never would have come to light if McCormick had not made it public.

"The public," Kilpatrick wrote, "has the right to know about this case."

A Florida judge is apologizing after he referred to a man who was in court for a traffic violation as a “sexual predator.”

Judge Carmine Bravo was arraigning 33-year-old Rodrakus Hooks, an ex-convict who has been seen in court before Bravo many times, on charges of driving without a license. Bravo encouraged Hooks to plead guilty to the charge and take a 15-day jail sentence, but he told the judge that he can’t do any time because he has a baby on the way.

“I got a baby mama back there … a baby fixing to be born,” Hooks said, referring to his pregnant 21-year-old fiancée Gwen Brown, who was sitting in the courtroom. When Bravo asked if the couple were married, Hooks said no.

“You ain’t got a baby. You’re just a sexual predator with a younger girl. How old are you?” he asked Brown. “15? 16?”

“I’m going to tell you straight up, man-to-man,” Bravo said to Hooks. “You and I know each other. We’ve been around. If you’re not married to the mother, she’s having a baby. You’re just someone she likes to visit.”

Courtroom video captured the entire exchange, which took place last week in a Seminole County, Florida courtroom.

“He made me feel useless, like I was just a nobody — like I’m having a baby from just anybody or something. It was upsetting and I know everyone in the courtroom was like, ‘Wow,’” Brown told Central Florida ABC News affiliate WFTV.

Though he has never been charged with a sex crime, records show that Hooks has been sentenced over a dozen times with charges including possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, domestic violence, theft and driving without a license.

Since seeing the courtroom incident on camera Judge Bravo, who has been on the bench in Seminole County for 15 years, said he owes Hooks and Brown an apology.

“I’m embarrassed by how it sounds. I just did not come off in a very nice way. I owe them big time in terms of an apology,” the judge said.

Judge Bravo, whose current term ends next year, has offered to let another judge hear Hooks’ case.

The judge was man enough to apologize and that is admirable but this is something that shouldn't have been said in the first place. If the defendant were put behind bars and someone else who is also locked up heard the judge making the "sexual predator" remark might have taken it seriously and told others who will also act on it or if he doesn't like the person hit with this label this will be just the excuse he was looking for. Either way it's bad news for the young man who was the receiptant of the judge's careless remark. Would the judge have called a female defendant "a prostitute"? Would he have looked over to her boyfriend and asked him how much she charges? Hell no,he wouldn't have and the feminists would have gone crazy if he had.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Patrick Leahy will scrap a provision in draft legislation reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act following complaints that it would compromise due-process protections for college students accused of sexual harassment or violence.

“Because of the feedback he has received concerning this proposal, he does not plan to include it in the bill he later will introduce,” Erica Chabot, spokeswoman for the Senate Judiciary Committee, said this week.

Leahy, D-Vt., is the committee’s chairman.

His draft measure would have required federally funded colleges and universities to apply a lower standard of proof — a “preponderance” of evidence rather than “clear and convincing” evidence — in cases of alleged domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The provision would codify controversial guidance from federal education officials.

Academic, civil libertarian and victims groups said it would undermine the constitutional rights of people accused of campus crimes.

“These provisions are fatally flawed and do not belong in federal law,” Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, said on Oct. 31. “Reducing protections for students who are accused of serious misconduct will not increase justice.”

A group called “Stop Abusive and Violent Environments” issued an Oct. 27 news release headlined, “Leahy Bill would turn every college male into a rape suspect.”

“If Sen. Leahy’s version is passed, we can expect travesties of justice at every college in the nation,” said Phillip Cook, a spokesman for the group.

Ex security officer keeps abreast of situation

Man on trial over breast slicing

A FORMER Gold Coast security guard is on trial for allegedly slicing open his girlfriend's breasts to try to remove the implants that he partially funded.

Darryelle Arthur Dixon, 44, is charged with unlawful wounding and unlawful disfigurement of his former girlfriend Nicole Earthrowl.

The exotic dancer met Dixon in the 1990s and Southport District Court heard they had a history of violence.

Crown prosecutor Isaac Munsie told the court about an incident in March 2003 in which Dixon had cut Ms Earthrowl's hair off because he had paid for her hair extensions and believed he had a right to recover them.

Mr Munsie said the incident Dixon was on trial for happened in September 2004.

He said Ms Earthrowl and Dixon were not living together but she was staying at his house at the time.

"She came home at 11pm from work and he was drunk and wanted to have sex with her," Mr Munsie said.

"He accused her of sleeping with other people and the argument escalated throughout the night."

Mr Munsie said the arguing continued the next morning when Dixon allegedly cut Ms Earthrowl's clothes and told her he did not want her to go to work.

"She saw a small knife in his hand and thought he was going to cut her hair," he said.

Dixon allegedly stabbed her left breast and said: "You can't dance without boobs."

She told him he "had the wrong breast" and he allegedly stabbed her right breast and dragged the knife through her right nipple.

Dixon allegedly went outside and told a tradesman working nearby that his girlfriend had cut her breasts.

Ms Earthrowl later required plastic surgery.

The trial continues.

Boys sacrificed for female vanity

The following is from John The Other at a Voice For Men. I've been in the MRM for close to 19 years so there is very little that is going to make my jaw drop. Well suffice to say this article made my jaw drop. Read on and you'll see what I mean:

Here is an infant. This newly formed human being is full of promise, and is a locus of joy and pride to parents, siblings, and an extended community. This tiny, miraculous bundle is the object of all of our adoration, even the flintiest of stoics are mesmerized by the ancient wired-in response to love and protect this infant.

Here is a sharpened steel instrument. A doctor will use this tool to partially flay this tiny baby – mutilating a sensory organ. This pseudo-medical procedure has, according to almost every major medical association in the world; no therapeutic value. In fact, it is a procure popularized by a breakfast cereal salesman and medical crackpot. John Kellog described it as a method of preventing sexual pleasure in boys in his 1877 book, “Plain facts for old and young”.

A remedy which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision, especially when there is any degree of phimosis. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anaesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment.

We’re living in a culture which sees this as normal, so I’ll provide a little comparison by telling you what Dr. Kellog said about girls 2 pages later in the same book he extolled the virtues of boy-mutilation.

“In females, the author has found the application of pure carbolic acid to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement.”

In the modern context – promoters arguing for the continuation of infant mutilation claim it reduces the transmission incidence of aids.

The studies from which this claim are drawn are widely disputed, based on questionable methodology, but for the moment, lets assume transmission rates of communicable disease can are actually reduced by some percent in circumcised populations. Condoms are more effective, and don’t require cutting off part of a human’s body.

This argument is the equivalent of cutting out your eyeballs to prevent eye injury rather than wearing safety glasses. The claim of prevention of infection is asinine, but it continues to distract from a much more realistic reason for continuing the practice.

Women’s cosmetic make-up products, and some medical products utilize foreskin tissue harvested from circumcised infants. This provides a profit motive for advocacy research from “medical” companies profiting by the ongoing mutilation of baby boys.

One example of this is the company called Advanced Tissue Science (A.T.S.)[1]. This corporation is based in La Jolla, CA. They are the makers of a product sold under the brand name Dermagraft-TC, which is an artificial skin created from harvested foreskins from infant circumcision.

A.T.S. is also the makers of NouriCel, another product made from harvested foreskins, and one of the main ingredients of SkinMedica’s ( a cosmetics company ) TNS Recovery Complex product.

Infant mutilation is driven by women who want a better wrinkle-cream[2]. SkinMedica isn’t the only company selling beauty products made from mutilated children. Its merely a famous example, publicly endorsed by celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters who bragged about the use of mutilated infant’s body parts before this turned out to be a bad public-relations move for each of them. Oprah’s web-site has subsequently removed the bragging claims of skin rejuvenation through harvested foreskin products. She has not yet aired a show or written a word about the ethicacy of the use of infant tissue in women’s beauty products.

The unnecessary mutilation of infant boys has another cost besides the the fact that circumcised men are denied a major sensory organ. The procedure is fatal to about 117 infants in the US every year[3]. Although the practice of sexually mutilating male infants is increasingly criticized, the procedure continues to be trivialized as a minor, harmless procedure in mainstream media. It would be impolite to tell women, the demographic controlling 65% of disposable income that their beauty products come at the cost of the sexual mutilation, and in some cases – the killing of infants.

Not yet, at least. In light of the recent public celebration by woman in the mommy-blogging community of adult male sexual mutilation such as the Catherine Becker case – a women’s make-up product openly flaunting damage to male infants might even outsell competing products which don’t publicize the source of harvested human flesh.

Then there’s the religious apologists.
In July of 2011, while California debated a ban on infant circumcision, the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, leith Anderson said[4]:

“While evangelical denominations traditionally neither require nor forbid circumcision, we join Jews and Muslims in opposing this ban and standing together for religious freedom [...] Jews, Muslims, and Christians all trace our spiritual heritage back to Abraham. Biblical circumcision begins with Abraham. No American government should restrict this historic tradition. Essential religious liberties are at stake”.

Sexual mutilating an infant is, according to the the National Association of Evangelicals, an essential religious liberty. The right of a child to freedom from harm is apparently not.

Between the profits of corporations, the frivolous self interest of female consumers, and the fairy tails of stone age desert dwelling goat-herders, male children will likely continue to be mutilated and killed.

These reasons are all worthless.
An ethical human being does not abide the dismemberment of children.

Meanwhile, enjoy looking years younger, and don’t trouble your pretty head about the price payed.

Foreskin-derived skin, sourced from circumcisions (now considered by many experts to be painful and also unnecessary) is still often considered the "cruelty free" alternative to testing cosmetic products on animals.

But not all uses of foreskin fibroblast are "medical" in nature. One of the most publicized examples of the foreskin-for-sale trend involves a skin cream that has been promoted by none other than Oprah Winfrey. SkinMedica'sa face cream, which costs over $100 US for a 0.63 oz bottle, is used by many high-profile celebrities (such as Winfrey and Barbara Walters) as an alternative to cosmetic surgery. Winfrey has promoted the SkinMedica product several times on her show, and her website, which raves, there's "a new product that boosts collagen production and can rejuvenate skin called TNS Recovery Complex. TNS is comprised from six natural human growth factors found in normal healthy skin...the factors are engineered from human foreskin!"

During the show, the doctor promoting SkinMedica cream warned that some people may have ethical questions regarding using a product that is made from the derivative of foreskins (to which Winfrey made no response). Why ethical questions? The foreskins come from circumcisions, and male circumcision is now a controversial topic. In a discussion on Mothering.com, one querent asked, "If the cream was made from the bi-product of baby afro-American clitoral skin, would Oprah still be promoting it?" There's no answer to that question on Mothering or Winfrey's site, and Winfrey declined The Tyee's request for an interview.

Oprah is not only evil she is a coward as well. Fuck her.

Senator Amy Klobuchar wants to censor the net

I received this heads up from Demand Progress and it leaves me with one question: what are they putting in the Washington D.C. drinking water? Anyway here it is:

Crazy and awesome story: Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is the lead sponsor of the bill that would make it a felony to post certain streamed content online -- meaning ordinary Americans would risk getting locked up for posting karaoke videos, cover band performances, video game play-throughs, and more to YouTube. It's now been rolled into the House's version of the Internet Blacklist Bill.

Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber got famous by posting videos of his covers of other artists' songs on YouTube, so he could go to jail if this legislation passes. He was asked what he thought about her proposal, and his answer couldn't have been more dead-on:

"Whoever she is, she needs to know that I'm saying she needs to be locked up - put away in cuffs." He added, "People need to have the freedom... people need to be able to sing songs. I just think that's ridiculous."

Let's make sure everybody in Minnesota knows that their senator is wasting her time on punitive Internet censorship legislation -- and losing her public spat with the Beebs.

Boys don't matter

The most controversial topic in the news right now is the Penn State child abuse scandal and everyone is up in arms,from the students protesting openly to those that issue anonymous death threats. Do the boys matter? I certainly hope they do but they only matter when accused is a man. Male victims certainly don't matter when the perpetrator is a woman aka Mary Kay Letourneau or Debra Lavebe. Even worse is that the female rapists can turn it back on the victim and claim "rape" when the true male victim threatens to go to the police. Imagine going through the hell of being a male rape victim only to have your rapist say that you raped her and now you are in a prison cell. How federal regulations are making college ‘risk management’ lawyers rich

In our increasingly regulated society, seemingly small changes in government regulations can imperil some businesses and enrich others. Here’s a story about how a 19-page letter from the Department of Education is making a small number of people a large amount of money.

A recent article in Philadelphia magazine by reporter Sandy Hingston has provided a rare glimpse into the college “risk management” industry and one of its leaders, a Malvern, Pennsylvania, lawyer by the name of Brett Sokolow. The founder of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM) and several other higher education-focused groups, Sokolow and his group are hired as consultants by many schools seeking advice on how to limit their liability in lawsuits and reduce the risk that the federal Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) will yank a school’s federal funding. With as much as half a billion dollars a year on the line for schools like Yale or Berkeley, colleges pay dearly for this advice.

NCHERM boasts more than 800 college and university clients. It also puts on training seminars and conferences for the administrators who run those colleges. This is a very profitable business. As the Philadelphia magazine article pointed out, “In August, NCHERM hosted a seminar for college administrators on the role of the newly required Title IX coordinator. One hundred seventy people attended, at $2,500 a head. Gross revenue: $425,000.” That’s from a single four-day conference (the price doesn’t include meals, travel or lodging), and they’re doing it again in October. Attendance nets participants a “Title IX Coordinator Certification,” which is convenient for meeting the government’s vague requirement that administrators be trained in some way.

October’s conference lists five “faculty” members, three of whom are the partners of NCHERM. If attendance is the same as last time, that’s $85,000 per person. Even after subtracting overhead, that’s not too shabby for four days’ work. But why are colleges and administrators willing to pay so much money for this training?

The answer is found in the increasingly Byzantine laws and regulations that govern higher ed. Indeed, new regulations issued by OCR this April massively increased the risks for colleges dedicated to traditional ideals of American justice (such as presuming innocence before guilt is proven) and the students that attend them. The federal government now mandates that campuses use a “preponderance of the evidence” (roughly a 50.01% or “more likely than not” level of certainty) standard for determining guilt in sexual misconduct cases, and that both sides must be able to appeal a panel’s verdict, even if the accused is found not guilty. Most of the nation’s top schools provided much better protections for the accused before these regulations arrived, and college lawyers must be cursing the arrival of even more complicated regulations to wrestle with.

One would think “risk management” lawyers would be opposed to increasing the risks their clients face, but one would be wrong. As the Philadelphia article reports about Sokolow:

For more than a decade, the genial 39-year-old has been warning colleges and universities — he’s of counsel to more than 20, and has advised thousands — that the day was coming when courts would allow Title IX claims against them for sexual assaults. “The ‘Dear Colleague’ letter [that contained the new federal regulations] was one of the most important moments of my professional life,” he says.

Sokolow’s interest in campus safety stems from his sophomore year at the College of William & Mary, when he began dating a fellow student who’d been sexually assaulted: “She became an activist, and I became one as well.” He thought then that Title IX should have provided her redress, but “everybody said, ‘Title IX is just athletics.’”

Do Sokolow’s clients know that the eventuality he has been warning schools about is the very one he says he has been working as an “activist” to bring about? Activist or not, Sokolow and NCHERM are wasting no time in taking advantage of the new regulations to bring in some new money. On August 15, he formed ATIXA, the Association of Title IX Administrators. It costs $599 per person to join (or $2,500 per campus), and it’s cosponsoring the $2,500-per-head October NCHERM seminar. Brett Sokolow is its executive director and it has the same address as NCHERM.

NCHERM is also bankrolling a new group called SCOPE, the School and College Organization for Prevention Educators, which, according to its website, “embraces an ecological, inclusive, holistic, feminist, public health, evidence-based and multi-disciplinary vision of prevention.” It’s based in another Philadelphia suburb and includes all three NCHERM partners on its board, and you pay to join that too.

And then there’s NaBITA, the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association, another organization that 1.) you pay to join ($169 per year); 2.) is based at the same address as NCHERM and ATIXA; 3.) is run by the partners of NCHERM; and 4.) runs expensive conferences you pay to attend. (Although, for the 2010 conference, you just went ahead and made your check out to NCHERM.) It also has “partners” (i.e., advertisers) that pay a fee to be featured on its website.

Changes to Violence Against Women Act Would Threaten Student Due Process Rights

WASHINGTON, October 31, 2011—Congressional legislation reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) may include new provisions sharply reducing due process protections for college students accused of sexual assault, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has learned. A draft of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2011 circulated by Senator Patrick Leahy's office effectively requires that colleges and universities receiving federal funding must employ a "preponderance of the evidence" standard—a 50.01%, "more likely than not" evidentiary burden—when adjudicating student complaints concerning sexual assault. The draft also includes a provision requiring universities to allow alleged victims of sexual assault to appeal the results of college disciplinary hearings, subjecting accused students to a form of "double jeopardy" not allowed in our nation's courts.

Deeply concerned about these threats to campus due process, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is urging citizens to contact their Senators and ask them to reject these provisions in the draft bill. FIRE holds no position on any other section of VAWA or the draft bill.

"These provisions are fatally flawed and do not belong in federal law," said FIRE President Greg Lukianoff. "Reducing protections for students who are accused of serious misconduct will not increase justice."

The draft bill provides that colleges adjudicating student complaints concerning sexual assault must "apply the standard of proof recommended by the most recent Guidance issued by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights" (OCR). OCR is the federal agency tasked with enforcing federal civil rights laws, including Title IX, in educational programs and institutions that receive federal funding. In an April 4, 2011, "Dear Colleague Letter" from Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali, OCR mandated that colleges and universities receiving federal funding must employ a preponderance of the evidence standard under Title IX when adjudicating allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault—a requirement the 39-year-old law had not previously been interpreted to contain. OCR's new regulations have already coerced colleges and universities across the country to abandon their commitment to due process protections for students accused of sexual assault.

Supreme Court precedent argues strongly against using the preponderance of the evidence standard in campus hearings concerning allegations of sexual harassment or sexual violence. FIRE pointed out in an open letter to OCR on May 5, 2011, that preponderance of the evidence is our judiciary's lowest evidentiary standard and provides insufficient protection to students accused of serious misconduct. FIRE explained that lowering the burden of proof in sexual assault cases will reduce confidence in campus judiciary systems and inevitably result in more incorrect guilty verdicts. OCR has failed to respond to FIRE's letter or to two letters from the American Association of University Professors in defense of due process rights.

Codifying OCR's new requirement in VAWA would cement OCR's errors into federal law, ensuring further injustices like those suffered by University of North Dakota (UND) student Caleb Warner. Under the preponderance of the evidence standard, Warner was found guilty of sexual assault and banned from campus for three years. However, the same evidence led North Dakota law enforcement to charge Warner's accuser with making a false report to law enforcement—a charge for which she is still wanted by the police. After 18 months, UND finally re-examined Warner's case only after the university's injustice was exposed by FIRE. Earlier this month, FIRE announced that UND had vacated Warner's suspension.

The draft bill also provides that colleges must maintain "procedures for the accused and the victim [emphasis added] to appeal the results of the institutional disciplinary proceeding." The requirement contradicts the Fifth Amendment's prohibition on "double jeopardy," whereby someone accused of a crime cannot be tried again for the same charge once the original hearing has properly ended in either acquittal or conviction. For the same reasons of fundamental fairness that our criminal justice system does not allow the accused to face double jeopardy, Congress should not force college students to face a second hearing for the same charge. Further, allowing accusers to appeal a not-guilty finding amplifies the due process problems introduced by the preponderance of the evidence mandate.

These new provisions in the VAWA reauthorization draft bill stem from the draft's incorporation of elements of the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act. (Section 304 of the draft is titled "Campus SaVE Act.") The Campus SaVE Act, introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, contains nearly identical requirements and similarly restricts fundamental due process rights. The proposed new rules dangerously tip the scales toward finding more innocent students guilty.

"Colleges have both a legal and a moral duty to address sexual assault on campus, but working to eliminate such crimes does not require colleges and universities to forsake fundamental student rights," Robert Shibley, FIRE's Senior Vice President, said. "FIRE asks Senator Leahy and his colleagues to retract these ill-advised provisions, lest the newest generation of college students learn the wrong lesson about the crucial importance of due process."

I am a woman and I’m no superheroine. I don’t have an academic or other institutional connection, the strength behind me of a life-affirming culture, faith, a clear understanding of my situation, or a firm idea what to do. What I do have is an ongoing intolerable experience that this life I and other women live is blighted by male oppression, and that this blight diseases the trunk of our species’ existence, not just the branches, not just the leaves. Every moment of our existence, this blight injures us. It kills our spirits, ruins our bodies, destroys our happiness, twists our children. It has thrived for so long it sometimes seems ineradicable. This blight has many names: the Patriarchal System, Misogyny, Male Supremacy, Women’s Subjugation. I just call it the System at the moment.

I also have this: the conviction, based on all that I am, that the System can be eradicated. And I have one other thing: the experience, action, and theory of other women around me now and living before me, who have exposed and attempted to eradicate this blight. Right now, I am learning from and contributing to the RadFem Hub, a new center of thought and action on the Internet for Radical Feminist women and women interested in their work.

Just who does she think runs the system? Men (and women yet the women aren't faulted) so men are to be blamed and eradicated.

I have become radicalized in the 21st century by the realization that the reformist strategies I have devoted much of my working life to are being absorbed by the System as a cost of doing business, that our successes over the last century and a half are being managed and quietly dissolved, and that the System is successfully resisting the changes in the public sphere by tightening its controls in the private sphere: the sphere of personal life, of sexual politics, of cultural mores, of psychology, of socialization of children. A tacit balance is being maintained. As we wrest for ourselves the vote, literacy, access to the legal system, we are brainwashed through the use of social controls into using these rights not for our own benefit, but to continue propping up our own oppression.

It’s an efficient and ruthless adjustment. The System gets subtler, dangles carrots, lets a few women in, gives up some of its most oppressive manifestations, and lets women burn themselves out. Reformist feminists give their money and time to setting up shelters, places for women to lick their wounds and be relatively safe for a little while. They try to get a few more percentage points in the futile effort to fully equalize the pay of women. They use themselves up filing lawsuits that go nowhere. They dilute their resources fighting for other groups who are also oppressed, leaving little for their own liberation. In short, they act as if the System is fundamentally sound. We have been reforming the System for a hundred fifty years in the Eurocentric countries, and we are trying to reform the entrenched System in the rest of the world, but wherever we are, the minute the King magnanimously lets us vote in municipal elections, arrests for daring to drive increase. We save a leaf here, lose a leaf there; the blight rages on.

You've got to be shitting me. Feminists got the following past: VAWA,IMBRA,The Family Leave Act,pro-female affirmative action laws,pro-female special protections such as sexual harassment,redifining rape to be whatever a woman wants it to be,female only criminal defenses that excuse women when they commit the most vile of crimes.

Some women have always radicalized; they achieved as much as could be achieved then, great steps forward. I think of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in England. It began as an attempt at reform, but it turned radical as it had to. Emmeline Pankhurst in 1913 described women cutting the lines for telegraphs and telephones between London and Glasgow, vandalism, arson, and prison resistance. She said, “Now I want to say to you who think women cannot succeed, we have brought the Government of England to this position, that it has to face this alternative: either women are to be killed or women are to have the vote…”

Yet they call men "aggressive". Let's update the following:

either women are to be killed or women are to decide men's fate.

If that is the choice they are not deciding our fate. So that gives us only one choice.

What is Radical Feminism as it enters the 21st Century? I’d say it’s the vanguard in the Feminist movement generally. I’d say it’s oriented to the future as a philosophy. I’d say it’s an ever-increasing global movement among women to live fully and freely, without further ado. We have a superb new tool in that endeavor, namely, the Internet, and we’re beginning to use it. We are seeing much potential in scientific research and related technologies.

I mentioned before that the System doesn’t have a single name. I think Radical Feminists have come to understand that many of these names lead to a mistake in thinking; the disease is not named, only its effect, the subjugation or oppression of women. The disease hides itself even in the name given to it. What causes the blight?

As Sheila Jeffreys has put it, and I think we all agree, it has to start with this: there is something wrong with men. It is a pathology with both physical and psychological features. I personally think it is as old as our evolution as hominids. I think it’s a biological adaptation which is now rotten, dangerous, and vestigial. I think we have to force the scientific establishment to take a clear look at this colossal sick old mammoth taking up all the space in the living room, and make it stop distracting itself with sexy cosmologies and particle accelerators. I don’t quite have a name for this pathology. Let’s give it a real name together.

1. Our Tradition. Eurocentric (or Northern, or Western, or industrial-society, or educated, whatever you want to call them) feminists now have a specific tradition of leaders and visionaries who have moved beyond reformism, including feminist groundbreakers like Sojourner Truth, Emmeline Pankhurst, Susan B. Anthony, Simone de Beauvoir, Germaine Greer, Kate Millett, and many others. For their times and circumstances, they are all great radicals. Women in all parts of the world have our resisters, our sisters who have died or been destroyed in life because they are female. Their names and actions are being retrieved and honored in each culture.

A broad, strong line of thinking has developed from the Eurocentric line through Mary Daly, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Simone de Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, James Tiptree Jr./Alice Sheldon, Andrea Dworkin, Valerie Solanis, Catherine MacKinnon, Octavia Butler, Joanna Russ, Sheila Jeffries, Ursula K. LeGuin, Monique Wittig, and many others. Some of these women are philosophers, some are poets, some are scientists, some are writers. Some are, to many of us, giants, like Dworkin and Daly.

A lot of these feminists are mentioned in feminist quotes and feminist quotes 2 I'm sure the author of this shit I'm responding to would love to know that not only are Dworkin and her dead ilk loving the evil unleashed but the entire forces of hell are as well.

2. Our Willingness to Speak the Unspeakable. So much of the work that has to be done is disgusting, ugly. I call it Cleaning the Toilet. Radical Feminists have rolled up our sleeves. We speak, no, we shout, the unspeakable. We address the taboo subjects that control us at a deep and horrible and soul-destroying level of social control; sexual perversion, incest, rape, the sickness in marriage, the hidden horrors of growing up female. We speak over and over; we de-sensitize so others can stand to speak also. We take on this pain because we have to get close to the sickness to see it and describe it and eradicate it. The RadFem Hub is a crucial part of this endeavor. To speak unvarnished truth is a radical act for women.

This is getting uglier and uglier. Unfortunately there is more.

3. Our Uncompromising Attitude. We have given up the polite, diplomatic, politic, earnest, logical, legalistic approach in favor of Realpolitik. We accept revolutionary attitudes and emotions; rage and despair, unflinchingness, uncompromisingness as motivational and curative. We see that compassion, empathy, a willingness to work with men, is seized upon and perverted by the System as it has always been, a weakness when dealing with the amoral. We don’t make the mistake of wasting our energies trying to persuade men to do anything. We are not naïve or idealistic, and we work to avoid falling into denial. There is no romanticization possible of the System. As painful as it is, we choose to act without illusions, especially the illusion that the System can be fundamentally changed from within.

What she is saying is "close your hearts to compassion close your hearts to pity."

4. Our Emphasis on Fundamental Change. We have moved beyond palliation (negotiation, mediation, reform, compromise, engagement with the System) to exploring effective means of extirpating male pathology, including being open to biological explanations and treatment of such psychopathy. We are concerned with the overall structure of male oppression. We are open to going wherever the evidence and experience lead us.

In recent years, studies of male hormones and aggression, the development of the science of social dominance theory, primate studies, and genetics have begun in my opinion to take us very close to the etiology of the underlying sickness. This emphasis on looking at the pathology of male hormonal mechanisms is a new kind of “essentialism” that offers hope, because treatments can be developed to mitigate the death-drive of men, their hierarchical psychology, their insensitivity to the pain of living creatures, their pleasure in violence and intimidation, their acquisitiveness, their rape and phallic obsessions. It’s an exciting development, though the science involved it goes hand in hand with new dangers to women which must be resisted.

Plans are laid out. Male hormones and aggression? So Katherine Kieu Becker is a man? Lorena Bobbit is a man? The persons who attacked Rayon Mcintosh were men? I don't think so.

6. Our Exposure of Manufactured Confusion about Gender identity vs. Performance of Conditioned Sex Roles. One inventive strategy of the System has been to encourage the notion that sex, male and female, is entirely culturally conditioned. Some feminist academics, especially in the fields of psychology, philosophy, and literature were duped into following this seductive thread and claiming too much: that women are only social constructs, ignoring the reality that men know exactly who we are and oppress us accordingly.

Victomology. The only thing feminists turn out that is manufactured is the data they disseminate.

7. Our Insistence that Cultural/Personal Control is More Malignant than Legal/Public Control. Let me introduce my use of this word, “malignant”. It’s a frightening word, isn’t it? It means to me the energy that causes a disease to progress. It is often stealthy, this energy. Radical Feminists are seeing the Malignant. It is metastasizing in a new form, insidious, abandoning the legal system, sneaking into our personal lives in a way we have not seen in our lifetimes. We are subject to it every time we turn on the TV, read about fashion shows or the wedding industry, see girls wearing less and less in the media photographs, see women heroized who announce that their sole purpose in life is to sexually please and be dependent on men for the rest of their lives. The pressure is intense and appears to be a reaction to Feminism’s legal gains.

One mechanism to control women is the pornography industry. It tortures, de-humanizes, and objectifies women, and yet it is being presented today to young women as harmless or even positive. This mechanism extends much more broadly than pornography media in the traditional sense; it includes the “sex-positive” idea, in which women are brainwashed to follow traditional male patterns of sexual objectification and usage. We are conned into sexual enslavement, encouraged to cater to male sex fantasies by publicly appearing in seductive clothing (slutwalks), told to accept multiple male sex partners without adequate protection,

Not only does she want to eradicate men but she wants to blame men for what women have done. Talk about adding insult to injury.

8. Our Exposure of Psychological Controls of Women such as Malignant Romanticism/Denial Control Mechanism, Stockholm Syndrome, Intimidation, Divide-and-Conquer, Confusion, Psychological Invasion. Again, the word “Malignant” is needed to describe these fantastically successful psychological controls on women. Many millions of women on this earth still don’t have more than an uneasy feeling regarding our oppression; we can’t imagine freedom; we love our oppressors. Many of us are attached by strong bonds to boys and men in our families. How to deal with this love and attachment is often a central and painful issue for feminists.

Attempts by women to separate ourselves even partially are met with the usual spectrum of intimidation: social controls, ridicule, hostility, violence. I think we need a reality-based psychology for women that explains and treats these mechanisms rather than training us to accept them. Beyond that, we must continue identifying them everywhere, but not merely to fight each individual manifestation. The ongoing focus of Radical Feminists is to stop them permanently from infecting men’s relations with women as a whole.

Separate men from women and demonize heterosexuality.

9. Respect for Other Strategies Attacking Male Oppression (Legal, Academic, Marxist). Radical feminists appreciate the work of feminists putting out the fires and relieving the immediate pain. We help when we can. We are all women, and we do want to ally with other women. We are sorry to see English and psychology and philosophy departments of universities still influenced by phallocentric theory, but we also have nothing but admiration for other professors like Donna Harroway and Sandra Harding for investigating the phallocentrism of epistemologies underlying various sciences, for instance, and others for developing some of the scientific and non-phallocentric theories I have mentioned above. White radical feminists support our sisters struggling with racism and sexualized racism, the effects of Eurocentric colonialism on women, and the damage to their cultures. Marxist/socialist feminists are close to our hearts; we do see how the economic systems we are drowning in are closely intertwined with the oppression of women. We aren’t rivals, any of us.

This is one of those doubleheaded dildo parties they like to hold.

10. Our Development of Inspirational Visions of the Future. One of the saddest and most difficult areas of feminist thought has to do with women’s invisible ancient history. Our failure thus far to dispositively show that woman-dominated societies, or even unoppressive societies, once existed has been a blow. It makes it seem as if such societies could not occur in the future. Reformist Feminists are much concerned with resurrecting this uncertain, invisibilized past.

Radical feminists, I believe, point to the future. If there are no such societies found, Monique Wittig said, invent them. There were never societies without legal slaves until recently. But legal slavery is no more.

What will the future look like? Radical Feminism is especially prominent in developing many visions of societies in which women are no longer, as Germaine Greer put it, a subjugated caste. Visions and goals stimulate the methods for reaching them. Joanna Russ presented us with an early vision of a woman-only society. James Tiptree, Jr. wrote a story in which the women characters flee earth entirely. Some say an earth with only 10% men will be a safe earth free of oppression. We need more of these visions.

My own personal vision is that women will cure the sickness that ails men and that men will stay around, hunkered in their man-caves playing the ukelele, leaving us in peace at last. As to what that cure may be, my best bet is that what’s wrong with men is that their androgens need genetic modification.

The Senate is voting to kill Net Neutrality on TUESDAY -- it's a power grab by big Telecom so they can control what information you're able to access online.

According to Free Press:

The Senate is expected to vote next week on a resolution of disapproval that would strip the FCC of the authority to enforce its Open Internet rules, and would render null all existing protection for Internet users. The vote could be incredibly tight.

The resolution only needs a simple majority to pass, so the future of Net Neutrality could come down to the whims of a handful of senators.

As The Hill newspaper notes, "Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) said she will push for a Senate vote on a resolution of disapproval to negate the regulations....A similar vote passed the House earlier this year but stalled in the Senate."

Senator Leahy's misandric bill makes VAWA worse

A recent article in Politico claims that GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain was accused of sexually harassing two women during his tenure at the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s. The accusations are sourced to a series of unnamed sources. Cain is denying the claims.

And what if Cain happened to be a student attending a university that is now required to follow the Dept. of Education's (DED) new sexual assault policy? The policy requires that colleges change their standard of proof from "clear and convincing" to a "preponderance of evidence."

What's more, the draconian DED policy says an institution must "take immediate action to eliminate the hostile environment... including taking interim steps before the final outcome of the investigation." That's why the twice-accused Cain would probably be long gone if he had been been attending the college.

China systematically undervalues its currency, making Chinese goods 40% cheaper compared to U.S. goods. This is illegal, and it's bankrupting American businesses. Ending China's currency manipulation would create over 2 million American jobs.

Remember that cashier at that New York McDonald's who defended himself against two violent dykes? Well he's mentioned in the news again. One story states he was fired and arrested along with the two dykes and the other is a defense fund for him.

The Rayon McIntosh Defense Fund has been set up on Facebook and is just one of several cyber-support pages.

The 31-year-old worker’s dad is also solidly in his son’s corner.

“You can’t go into a person’s workplace and attack them,” Rayon McIntosh Sr., 54, told The Post. “Let’s be real now -- this was self-defense.”

McIntosh Jr. -- an ex-con who served nearly 11 years for manslaughter, assault and weapons charges -- is caught on tape using a metal rod to beat patrons Denise Darbeau, 24, and Rachel Edwards, 24, breaking Darbeau’s skull and arm and cutting Edwards.

The fight began when the gals cussed McIntosh after he questioned a $50 bill they passed him.

Darbeau slapped him and jumped over the counter as her gal pal jumped into the fray.

McIntosh is charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was also fired.

His father plans to order up a good defense layer.

“We will not be railroaded,” he said.

One of O'Reilly's guests last night was Bill Bennett. He was there to plug his new book The Book Of Man which chronicles the decline of men propping up society. O'Reilly was quick to blame the left and rightfully so. O'Reilly mentioned the feminists must be happy to get rid of traditional manhood but Bennett said they weren't. Bennett also went on to say that young women today are upset about the situation with men today. So that's who Bennett's working for. Having O'Reilly and Bennett discuss the so-called "man crisis" and trying to resolve it from the perspectives and biases they are bringing with them is like watching two retarded chimpanzees trying to repair a car. It is amusing but you know nothing is going to get done.

Biden confronted on his remarks

To promote the first stage of President Obama's new economic stimulus plan, Vice President Joe Biden has repeatedly warned that failing to win passage of the measure could lead to dire results, including an increase of murders and rapes throughout the country. The reason for such spikes in major violent crime, Biden argues, is that a portion of the $35 billion in the bill will go to beef up police power.

At the University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Biden argued that the spending in the bill would be necessary to keep crime low. He expressed the same view a week earlier in Flint, Mich. where he suggested there was a correlation between fewer police officers and higher crime rates.

"Let's look at the facts," Biden said. "In 2008, when Flint had 265 sworn officers on their police force, there were 35 murders and 91 rapes in this city. In 2010, when Flint had only 144 police officers, the murder rate climbed to 65 and rapes, just to pick two categories, climbed to 229. In 2011, you now only have 125 shields. God only knows what the numbers will be this year for Flint if we don't rectify it."

Biden has supported increasing police budgets and the number of cops on the beat for several years, so his use of this rhetoric is far from surprising. He is, however, facing scrutiny from conservative critics for threatening that crime could increase if Congress doesn't endorse this stage of the Democrats' jobs bill, which will increase spending only on public-sector jobs.

Jason Mattera, the editor of the conservative newspaper Human Events, confronted Biden about his comments during a visit on Capitol Hill. Mattera, asked the vice president if he regretted using a "rape reference to describe Republican opposition" to the jobs bill.

"Let's get it straight, guy, don't screw around with me," Biden told Mattera, who is known for his brazen on-camera interview style. "Listen to me. I said rape was up three times in Flint, they're the numbers. Go look at the numbers. Murder's up, rape is up, burglaries are up. That's exactly what I said."

When Mattera asked if it was appropriate for a person in Biden's position to make warnings like that to advance a bill, Biden ended the interview.

Coming clean on 'dirty DUIs' in Contra Costa County
A whistle-blower tells how a private detective arranged for men to be arrested for drunk driving at the behest of their ex-wives and their lawyers —and that entrapment using decoys was only one of many alleged misdeeds.

October 16, 2011, 8:07 p.m.
Reporting from Martinez, Calif.— David Dutcher met Sharon on Match.com in late 2008, a few months after separating from his wife. "We had a lot in common," he recalled. Sharon loved four-wheel-drive trucks and sports.

They met for coffee, then dinner. Sharon was tall, slender, blond and beautiful. She moaned that she had not had sex in a long time. She told him he had large, strong hands and wondered if that portended other things. She described his kisses as "yummy."

"It felt a lot like Christmas," said Dutcher, 49, a tall, burly engineer with wavy red hair.

On their second date, Sharon suggested they join one of her friends "who was partying because she had closed a real estate deal," Dutcher said. They drove to an Italian restaurant in a suburb near San Francisco. Sharon's friend, "Tash," was a loud and raucous brunet who was pounding down shots.

The women fiddled with Dutcher's tie and massaged his neck and shoulders. The brunet unbuttoned her blouse to reveal generous cleavage. "I am way over my head with these girls," he remembered thinking. "I hadn't been out dating in a while."

Sharon had trouble finishing her tequila shots and asked Dutcher to help, he said. When the women went to the bathroom, two men at the other end of the bar peppered Dutcher with questions.

"Are you a celebrity?" they wanted to know.

The women suggested going to a house with a hot tub that Tash was housesitting, Dutcher said. He followed them in his truck. Within a few minutes, a flashing red light appeared in his rearview mirror. The officer said he had been swerving.

Three months later, Dutcher's wife filed a motion in their divorce case, telling the court that her soon-to-be former husband had been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and that she feared for their children's safety. The judge ordered that Dutcher's visits be supervised.

Then, earlier this year, Dutcher received a letter from Contra Costa County Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Harold W. Jewett. It contained a transcript of a police interview with Christopher Butler, a private detective and the subject of a state and federal criminal investigation.

"I hope in some small way this information will help you recoup both rights and dignities lost in one of the most deplorable legal practices I have ever heard of," Jewett wrote.

Dutcher had been duped.

The women who'd ogled him worked for Butler's detective agency. Sharon, who told Dutcher she was a divorcee employed by an investment firm, actually was a former Las Vegas showgirl.

A man who once worked for Butler had blown the whistle. He told authorities Butler arranged for men to be arrested for drunk driving at the behest of their ex-wives and their divorce lawyers — and that entrapment was only one of many alleged misdeeds.

Butler, 49, a former police officer, was arrested in February. In addition to setting up at least five DUIs, he sold drugs for law enforcement officers and helped them open and operate a brothel, collecting and delivering the profits, according to prosecutors and a statement Butler gave them after his arrest.

In the March 15 statement obtained by The Times, Butler said his accomplices reasoned that they could shield their illegal businesses because any complaints would be investigated by a state-run narcotics task force, which one of the officers headed.

The alleged crimes implicated three different law enforcement agencies — the San Ramon and Danville police departments and the narcotics task force — and took place in Contra Costa County, a collection of mostly middle-class communities that stretch from the East Bay shoreline opposite San Francisco to upscale suburbs inland.

Jewett called the scandal a "sordid drama" that overwhelmed the resources of the county and raised potential conflicts for police departments being asked to investigate their own.

In May, the FBI took over the probe, interviewing Dutcher and other ex-husbands arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. A federal grand jury indicted Butler and two of the officers in August and September. The charges included drug dealing, running a prostitution business and illegal possession of a weapon.

More indictments are expected. A third officer, implicated by Butler in the DUIs, faces state charges of accepting bribes to make arrests.

Stunned prosecutors combed through pending criminal cases and eventually dismissed charges in at least 20 DUI and vice crimes, tainted by the involvement of the accused officers. Two of them had once worked with Butler on the police force of the East Bay city of Antioch.

Butler also apparently hoodwinked reporters. His agency received national attention for employing gumshoe "housewives" who juggled soccer games with undercover spying. People magazine and Dr. Phil did stories. An East Bay magazine reporter who went on a ride-along with Butler later discovered that everything he had witnessed had been staged.

In what prosecutors now call "dirty DUIs," Butler paid his decoys $25 an hour for four-hour minimums. The women worked in pairs. One drank heavily with the target and the other drove.

Butler videotaped the encounters from a nearby table. When the man got into his vehicle, Butler tipped off police. The last DUI setup occurred in January.

Susan Dutcher, a substitute schoolteacher, said in a sworn declaration that she paid Butler $2,500 to obtain evidence that her husband drove while drinking. She insisted she did not authorize Butler to have him arrested because she did not want to imperil his job and his ability to pay child support.

Her lawyer's paralegal, who had recommended Butler, "made this all seem completely legal and as though it was standard practice" in divorce cases, she said.

Once Dutcher got into his truck, Butler called a police officer friend to report Dutcher had been drinking. Butler maintained the officer was not paid by him and did not know Dutcher had been set up. The officer, who has not been charged, later went to work for Butler.

Dutcher, an avionics engineer who works on rockets, said he was dumbfounded when he learned what happened. After his arrest, he could not get the heightened security clearance he needed for certain jobs.

Driven by anger and embarrassment, he contacted others he had learned had been set up, including Declan Woods, a contractor arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in 2007. Woods' ex-wife was represented by Mary Nolan, the same divorce attorney who worked for Susan Dutcher.

Butler told prosecutors the attorney referred him to Susan Dutcher because she was thrilled with his performance in the Woods case. In a sworn court declaration, Nolan denied having anything to do with hiring Butler in the Dutcher case; she could not be reached for comment about Woods' arrest.

Woods' ordeal began with a call for a kitchen remodel estimate. The prospective client turned out to be an attractive, flirtatious brunet. She told him she was new in town, a writer, and wondered what he was doing that night. He said he planned to grab dinner at a local cafe.

"Hey, this chick is picking up on me," Woods joked to his business partner after the two men met with her.

The woman showed up with a friend that evening. They went to a nearby bar, where the three drank lemon drops.

Woods said in an interview that the brunet was so aggressive he twice pushed her off his lap. Calm yourself, calm yourself, he remembered telling her. Looking back, he said, he should have realized something was wrong.

"Things like that don't happen to blokes like me," said the British-born Woods. "But the alcohol kicks in, you are having a good time, and you think, what the hell."

The women suggested going to a house with a hot tub. Woods hopped into his truck and followed them. He was pulled over almost immediately. "I have been set up," he remembered telling the officer.

Prosecutors offered to help Dutcher and Woods remove their DUI convictions and approved the dismissal of charges against the three other men. Dutcher obtained a court order last month to expunge his conviction.

Even though the men had been drinking, prosecutors said Butler's stings violated a little-used 19th century law that makes it a felony to conspire to subject another person to arrest. The female decoys have not been charged.

Woods said the arrest hurt his business and cost him thousands of dollars in fines. His ex-wife declined to discuss the case but said she did not authorize Butler to have Woods arrested.

Dutcher has worked long hours seeking vindication. After spending nearly $30,000 on an attorney, he decided to represent himself in an attempt to overturn the divorce and custody agreement he signed last year. He said his ex-wife had him "over the barrel" after the DUI.

M. Pamela Lauser, Susan Dutcher's current lawyer, doubts Dutcher will succeed. "Nobody held a gun to his head," she said of his drunk driving arrest. "Nobody forced him to drink.... The guy was drunk and he was driving. How is that a dirty DUI?"

Dutcher agreed he "made a terrible mistake."

A trial date on the divorce settlement is set for Nov. 17.

Recently Wikipedia started deleting articles that were favorable to men or they misrepresented them. The dedication to Thomas Ball is gone along with other pages that were favorable to men's rights. The men's rights page has been altered to make MRA's the bad guys and to further the idea of female victim hood. In fact A Voice For Men discusses this in a couple of places.

This requires a bit of context, which I’ll establish as quickly as I can.You’ve just comprehensively re-written wikipedia’s entry on Men’s Rights. The page, formerly provided a reasonable summary of issues of concern with a movement called “the men’s rights movement.”

Now, after a thorough rewrite, the wikipedia entry under the heading “Men’s Rights,” characterizes the phrase to refer to collective privilege afforded to men throughout history. Essentially you’ve provided the definition of “male privilege” as it is presented in the context of Patriarchy Theory (PT).

PT, by the way, is one of the ideological tenets of Radical Feminism, thus the Men’s Rights wikipedia page, formerly addressing a movement called “the mens rights movement” is now a reference page for an item of mainstream feminist doctrine. The rewrite was skillful, certainly – and appears to have taken considerable work. Just look at all those links to feminist advocate research.

Here’s my question. or yours, actually. If you find yourself rewriting reference material to obscure and minimize the topic of that reference material; in fact censoring that topic, to create a public impression that it does not exist – do you recognize your own action as censorship? Taking that question further – do you recognize that the urge to silence opinions other than your own is a totalitarian urge?

In a sudden and sweeping change of the Wikipedia page on Men’s Rights, references to the myriad of issues and efforts highlighted over the past forty years of pro-male activism have been replaced with the standard litany of feminist dogma about male privilege and patriarchy. They start the page (just below the notice challenging its neutrality) with a simple definition: Men’s rights are the entitlements and freedoms claimed by boys and men.

That is followed up by a list of historical and other items that point to male privilege and hegemony, as well as female oppression. Further down the line, below the remainder of the misdirecting clutter (and past where most people will actually read), there is cursory mention of some elements of the MRM, pointing to NCFM and ACFC. This is where they make their first and only mention of men’s rights activists. It’s placed just below a sub-header addressing the male dominant laws in Pakistan.

There are other, very minor references to legitimate men’s rights issues, but they are all literally buried in a deluge of pro-feminist perspective that was added to the page in one fell swoop sometime in the last few days.

The intent here is transparent. The Wikipedia page on men’s rights has been rewritten, in deliberate and premeditated fashion, in order to turn it into a tool that will lead readers to conflate the men’s rights movement with an agenda of domination and control over women. Actually, the page has not been so much rewritten, as it has been reengineered, to turn it from an information source into an instrument of disinformation and deception. None of this was done accidentally, as anyone who has ever read the previous incarnation of that page can clearly see.

A key piece of Wikimedia’s strategic plan is to close the gender gap by encouraging more women to participate in projects. One area where we already see progress is the Wikipedia Ambassadors program, developed in conjunction with the Public Policy Initiative. During the 2010-11 academic year, university students across the United States are writing Wikipedia articles as part of their coursework, and they learn the Wikipedia basics from trained Campus Ambassadors who come into the classroom to teach students how to start contributing.

These Campus Ambassadors are the first face of the Wikimedia movement that most students have seen, and 27 of the 59 Campus Ambassadors this term (that’s 46%) are women. At Indiana University Bloomington, for example, six Campus Ambassadors assist three classes of students — and five of them are women.

“I think I am putting a face on Wikipedia instead of it just being a web site that people use,” says Chanitra Bishop, a librarian at IU and one of the five female Campus Ambassadors there. “Hopefully, if students and professors have thought about becoming involved, they will see that they can and that they have unique knowledge to contribute.” Likewise, Indiana Library and Information Science master’s student Beth Brockman was drawn to becoming a Campus Ambassador because of her desire to make Wikipedia a better resource for anyone to use, but she thinks seeing women teaching about Wikipedia in university classrooms can be an inspiration to the female students in the class.

“I would hope that I am providing a model for any new editor, not just women, and I would hope that I am contributing to making Wikipedia a professional and respectful environment,” says Adrianne Wadewitz, a longtime Wikipedian. “Being a Campus Ambassador allows me to join together two things about which I’m passionate: Wikipedia and teaching. It allows me to show professors how useful Wikipedia can be as a teaching tool and it allows me to learn, in turn, from students and other teachers about a variety of subject matters and techniques for communicating.”

Ellie Dahlgren is a staff member at the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Indiana, and she agrees with Adrianne that her primary focus as a Campus Ambassador is on what the students get out of the Wikipedia assignment.

“I like challenging instructors to think about teaching and learning in different ways,” Ellie says. “I like being part of a team that creates unique and practical (i.e., real-world) experiences for students.”

And it’s not just Campus Ambassadors closing the gender gap. More than half of the 600 students contributing to Wikipedia through the Public Policy Initiative this term are women. Two classes feature an all-women roster: women’s college Simmons’ “Public Relations Seminar” and Georgetown University’s “Women and Human Rights.”

Brenda Burk is a librarian at nearby Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and she travels to Bloomington to assist in the classrooms there. Becoming a Campus Ambassador has given Brenda a new way to connect with students, she says. Brenda says the principles librarians support — understanding resources, determining source reliability, and verifiability — complement Wikipedia well. And she’s particularly excited to see the students in her class continue contributing to such an important resource.

“Seeing me use Wikipedia and edit encourages them to jump in,” Brenda says of her students. “In the class, the women are a bit more cautious starting to edit and create articles. Once they start and become comfortable in this environment they get excited about it. Hopefully the enthusiasm continues.”

In Flint, Michigan, Vice President Joe Biden suggested that more rapes and murders could occur if President Barack Obama's jobs bill is not passed.

"In 2008, when Flint had 265 sworn officers on their police force, there were 35 murders and 91 rapes in this city," Biden said. "In 2010, when Flint had only 144 police officers, the murder rate climbed to 65 and rapes--just to pick two categories--climbed to 229. In 2011, you now only have 125 shields. God only knows what the numbers will be this year for Flint if we don't rectify it."

The vice president also seemed to suggest that the Obama administration's first stimulus is the reason rapes and murders were not even higher in 2010 and 2011." And God only knows what that number would have been had we not been able to get a little bit of help," Biden said.

Advocates for men move into social media, Internet in fight for parity

A burgeoning civil rights movement, focused on eliminating what its members see as broadening social and legal disparities between men and women, is using social media and the Internet to spread its message demanding parity.

Active in North America but also evident in increasingly visible efforts abroad, the Men's Rights Movement (MRM) is fighting proposed and existing legislation its members see as "misandric," while challenging social customs and traditions its activists believe favor women over men.

According to Judith Baer's "Historical and Multicultural Encyclopedia of Women's Reproductive Rights in the United States," the MRM, which Baer calls the Father's Rights Movement (FRM), traces its origins to the early 1960s. She specifically identifies the Internet as the means through which the FRM gained momentum.

"After the World Wide Web took off in the 1990s," she writes, "FRM cites [sic] proliferated on the Internet."

Amid the spread of fathers' and men's rights groups on the Web, the book widely considered to be the foundation of the MRM, Warren Farrell's "The Myth of Male Power," was published in 1994.

"I wrote 'The Myth of Male Power,'" Dr. Farrell explains, "because I came to understand that historically neither sex had real power – both sexes had real obligations, responsibilities, and roles."

He decries what he sees as the "disposable" position of men in contemporary society, citing higher suicide rates, lower life expectancies and other social indicators unfavorable to men. He outlines various legal and financial disadvantages men experience across a broad range of scenarios.

Farrell also draws the tie between the FRM and the MRM as necessarily an outgrowth of those legal and financial issues.

"When men are younger," he told WND, "they are more concerned with the balance between how to fit in and how to be different; when they consider marriage, they are focused on sex until they fall in love. It is only when men encounter failure that we begin a fundamental questioning of our roles. Usually that's if they are a dad and there's a divorce. Then men are shocked to find they have few rights if their rights are challenged by the mom."

The movements for fathers' and men's rights were once firmly, and briefly, associated with drum circles and weekend retreats. Today, however, the MRM comprises members ranging from prominent figures such as Internet radio host Paul Elam of the organization A Voice for Men, to YouTube activists such as Bernard Chapin, to pseudonymous bloggers such as "Angry Harry" and Elam's colleague "John the Other." Using podcasts, social media and their Internet media, these self-described men's rights activists take advantage of the immediacy and interactivity offered by today's technology to spread their message.

That message encompasses a wide variety of issues considered touchstones of the MRM, including inequity in the family court system, a lack of social support services for men, the decline of college enrollment among men versus women, and legislation like the Violence Against Women Act, which activists believe emphasizes violence against women at the expense of ignoring or marginalizing violence against men.

While "gender feminism" is frequently blamed as the root cause of these problems, few issues within the MRM inspire as much vocal outcry as false allegations of sexual assault.

"We have men literally going to prison and having their lives destroyed, their reputations... all over finger pointing," Elam says. "This is a huge problem across the movement."

Elam and his fellow activists have fought back by creating their own website, "Register Her," which purports to be a public database of false accusers, violent female offenders and even public figures who have advocated against men.

One of Elam's more prominent targets among the latter is Mary Kellett, an assistant district attorney in Maine, whom the site calls a "corrupt public official" who "has distinguished herself by prosecuting numerous cases of rape and domestic violence against men within her community based on no evidence."

Calls for comment to Kellett's office were not returned.

The MRM has its own vocabulary and catchphrases. Paul Elam and listeners to his Internet radio show frequently speak of "taking the red pill," a reference to the film "The Matrix." Men motivated by self-destructive chivalry are "White Knights," while the acronyms MGTOW and NAWALT signify "Men Going Their Own Way" and "Not All Women Are Like That."

Activism over men's rights has gone global, with visible men's rights groups active in Australia, the U.K. and other Western nations. In Japan, a growing "herbivore" movement comprises Japanese men opting out of traditional social roles while expressing little or no interest in women or sex.

The movement for men's rights is not limited to men, either. One prominent activist is Dr. Tara Palmatier, a clinical psychologist and counselor who runs the website Shrink4Men.

"I was and am personally very concerned by the double standard our culture and the field of psychology practices when it comes to female perpetrated abuse and criminality," Palmatier says. "As a society, we need to disabuse ourselves of the penurious notion that all women are victims and all men are aggressors. This is a simplistic lie with serious implications."

Elam echoes Palmatier's sentiments while insisting that activism for men's rights is not denigration of women.

"It's not dismissing women's issues to say, 'Wait a minute, no, we're going to talk about men right now,'" he says.

Elam is also frank when asked what he hopes to achieve with his activism.

"The end goal is admittedly ambiguous. From a social standpoint ... the whole idea is to try to restore some sort of sanity between men and women [so that] we can repair some of the widespread gulf that's created between the two in this culture."

YouTube activist Chapin is quick to describe that gulf.

"I'm a devil four times over," he says. "I'm white, I'm male, I'm a Christian and I'm a patriot."

What he wants, and what he hopes to achieve as a men's rights activist, is even more direct.

"Stop lying about me," he demands, "and stop lying about males in general."

Oral sex, HPV puts non-smoking men at highest risk for oral cancer: What are the facts?

HPV, otherwise known as the human papillomavirus, is a leading cause of cervical cancer for women but the nasty virus is now causing a spike in oral cancer and ravaging an entirely different group: men.

Cases of oral cancer resulting from exposure to the HPV-16 strain of the virus are hitting epidemic proportions in the U.S., doctors say.

Though the mention of oral cancer evokes images of gravely-voiced chain-smokers, the disease now has a new face: mostly white, male, non-smokers in their late 30s and early 40s.

The tumors forming on the back of their tongues and tonsils have nothing to do with nicotine - they are directly linked to engaging in oral sex with multiple female partners.

"If you've had more than five or six sexual partners, you are at a higher risk," Dr. Eric M. Genden, professor and chair of head and neck surgery at Mount Sinai Medical center told the Daily News. "We're only now beginning to see the beginning of a bell curve."

Women can get it from men as well although their chances are lower, according to doctors.

The human papillomavirus (HPV), a nasty bug with strains that causes genital warts and cervical cancer in women, is now the top cause of oral cancer in men, beating out smoking and drinking, according to reports from the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Oncology as well as other research and treating institutions.

The number of smokers in the U.S. has steadily declined in the past 50 years, yet the rate of oral cancer has remained relatively steady and recently been on the increase.

The reason is an increase in HPV-16 in the U.S. population.

Oral cancer is frightening because it often goes undetected until a lump appears on the neck or a patient begins to suffer from a persistent hoarseness. By then, even though the patient may feel fine, he could be in the late stages of the deadly disease.

If detected early, the chance for surviving oral cancer from HPV is high, between 85 to 90%. Treatments - localized radiation, chemotherapy and sometimes surgery - are effective when used in the early stages. When surgery is part of the solution, the options can be conventional surgery or a new robotic surgical technique, which reduces scarring and side effects in some patients.

Brian Hill, a medical device manufacturer, was in his mid-forties when found a hard spot on his neck 14 years ago. He went to his ear, nose and throat doctor, who dismissed the bump as an infection and prescribed antibiotics.

But a biopsy later found the lump was cancerous.

Though he had never smoked a cigarette, Hill was told he had a low chance of survival as the node in his neck was positive for squamous cell carcinoma, the most common oral cancer.

Hill has since founded the Oral Cancer Foundation and spends his time working with patients, doctors and dentists, as well as campaigning in Washington to raise awareness about the danger of oral cancer and the links to HPV.

"Anyone old enough to have engaged in sexual behaviors known to transmit this virus needs to be screened annually for oral cancer," said Hill. "It's the only way to catch this disease at its early stages."

Hill believes many doctors and researchers are still in the dark about the ties between HPV-16 and oral cancer, despite the rise in diagnoses in the past decade.

"We don't know exactly if or how long HPV-16 may lay dormant, or why it strikes certain people and not others," he said. "What we don't know exceeds what we do know."

Nearly all sexually active Americans will come in contact with HPV, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Young women are encouraged to get the HPV vaccine, but doctors say there is little point in vaccinating patients past the age of 26 since the likelihood of prior exposure to cancer-causing strains is so high.

Young people now are having a lot more oral sex with many more partners so exposure rates are higher.

HPV is the most common STD in the U.S. About 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV. Another 6 million people become newly infected each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HPV is passed through skin-to-skin contact, not fluids. Besides conventional sex, oral sex and even deep French kissing may spread the virus.

Doctors are sounding the alarm, but have stopped short of advising men to abstain.

"This is not a call to stop having oral sex," said Dr. Mark D. DeLacure, a head and neck surgeon at NYU's Langone Medical Center. "People have to continue living their lives, however we make the best choices when we know all the risks."

DeLacure said using condoms and dental dams during oral sex could reduce transmission, but acknowledges the idea is hardly appealing or practical.

"Limiting your sexual partners is a way to reduce your risk," said DeLacure. "But still, there are no guarantees."

Doctors also have this advice: Don't panic.

Patients with HPV - even the cancer-causing strain - may never develop cancer and may never transmit the virus to a partner.

The vast majority of individuals have immune systems that recognize the virus as a threat and easily defeat it.

Doctors instead recommend vigilance.

The important issue is persistence - meaning attention to how long an unusual symptom like a lump has lasted. When an abnormality persists for longer than 14 to 21 days, it's time to see an expert.
"If you've got a sore tonsil that is still a problem after a couple of weeks and particularly if it's localized to one side, I would say that's sign it's time to talk to a doctor," said DeLacure.

And talk to the person who sees your mouth the most: Your dentist.

Dentists, too, are becoming more aware of HPV and its role in the development of oral cancer.

A good dentist will know what to look for and where to look for it.

Jobs Bill excludes men

Helping women reach their economic potential

The American Jobs Act, which President Obama sent to Congress two weeks ago, is vital for our country’s women. It would keep 280,000 teachers — most of them women — from losing their jobs due to budget cuts. It would put hundreds of thousands of unemployed women back to work. It would put more money in the pockets of almost 80 million working women, by cutting their payroll taxes next year. As the president has said, Congress has a responsibility to pass this bill.

However, even as we wait for Congress to act, the Obama administration is taking steps to create economic opportunities for women and girls.

On Monday, for example, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will announce new steps to make it easier for women to pursue careers in engineering and the sciences — fields that are critical to our nation’s economic growth.

Women working in science, technology, engineering and math careers earn 33 percent more than those in other occupations, and these “STEM” skills will become even more important in high-growth, high-tech fields such as health-care technology and advanced manufacturing.

As with women throughout the workforce, however, women in STEM jobs are often expected to establish themselves professionally at the same time they are starting families. This forces women to choose between their careers and their responsibilities at home. Understandably, many of our most promising young scientists and engineers drop out of the pipeline.

To support female innovators and help women contribute to the economy, the NSF is taking steps to allow researchers to balance their responsibilities in the lab with their responsibilities at home. For example, if a researcher needs to delay the start of a funded project for a family-related reason, such as taking care of a young child or an aging parent, the NSF will work with her to make that possible without causing her to lose her grant. If she needs to interrupt research to have a baby, there will be options to add the lost time onto the end of her funding period without penalty. In many cases, NSF will even pay for technicians who can keep labs and research projects running during a period of parental leave.

As an agency devoted to evidence-based decision making, NSF will also support research into the effectiveness of flexible workplace policies. This will ensure that the new programs are working and will help identify best practices to share with the public and private sectors.

For many women who dream of becoming scientists and researchers, these kinds of simple, common-sense changes will make a world of difference. And our entire economy can benefit, because if more women have the chance to pursue STEM careers, it will lead to more innovation, entrepreneurship and growth.

Monday’s NSF announcement also highlights the ways that flexible workplaces contribute to our economic competitiveness. There is a common misconception that workplace flexibility policies cost businesses money. In fact, the opposite is true. A study from the White House Council of Economic Advisers found that flexible workplaces often attract the best workers and experience reduced absenteeism, lower turnover and higher productivity. As President Obama has said, “Workplace flexibility isn’t just a women’s issue. It’s an issue that affects the well-being of our families and the success of our businesses.”

We also recognize that a lack of work-life balance prevents many workers from reaching their economic potential. Today, nearly two-thirds of American families with children are headed by two working parents or by a single parent. These parents cannot thrive in a job where they are unable to care for their children. At a time when working men and women across our nation face deep economic uncertainty, it is wrong to ask them to choose between their jobs and their families.

We understand that these policies are no substitute for congressional action on the economy. But we also know that government can make a difference — through direct action and by working with outside organizations. A broad coalition of groups has joined the Obama administration in addressing workplace flexibility for those in STEM fields, including the Association for Women in Science, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Association of American Universities.

When President Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly last week, he made a powerful economic argument on behalf of the world’s women. “No country can realize its potential,” he said, “if half its population cannot reach theirs.” As the president pursues a short-term recovery and long-term prosperity, he will continue to focus on empowering America’s women and girls, and giving every American a chance to contribute fully to our economy.

Congressional briefings on domestic violance

A Congressional Briefing on the Effects of Domestic Violence on Children has been scheduled for this coming Wednesday, Oct. 12 in Washington DC. The event is hosted by Makers of Memories and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

As you can see to the side, the image they chose to promote the briefing shows a man, presumably a father, yelling at a small girl who is cowering in the corner. And no surprise, the websites of Makers of Memories and the NCADV are brimming with gender-biased information.

SAVE supports evidence-based efforts to address young victims of family violence. These are the facts that need to be highlighted:

1. Women are at least as likely as men to engage in intimate partner violence. One national survey found mothers are twice as likely as fathers to engage in severe marital violence. [i]

2. Most child abuse is committed by mothers. According to the DHHS, "approximately one-half (53.8%) of child abuse and neglect perpetrators were women and more than 40 percent (44.4%) were men." [ii]

3. Partner-abusing mothers are equally likely to abuse their children as partner-abusing fathers. [iii]

Unfortunately, the Makers of Memories website is filled with ugly, misleading statements, including this inflammatory claim: "Each night 1 million children go to bed to the sounds of their mother being beaten." The NCADV website is also biased, making the nonsense claim that "There is not a typical woman who will be battered - the risk factor is being born female."

When groups put that kind of stuff on their websites, you know that any Briefing they host is likely to cherry-pick the research and stereotype males as abusers.

Today we'd like you to contact Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin. Tell her the Briefing hosts have a track record of providing inaccurate and unbalanced information, and she needs to cancel the briefing until she identifies legitimate experts to testify. Here's the contact information:

Change in prostate cancer detection procedures

PSA testing is at risk.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has prepared a draft recommendation against prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer. While not binding, primary care doctors usually follow USPTF guideline. Insurance companies have already begun discussions about ceasing psa test coverage.

The psa test has limitations, as well as benefits. This is no doubt that we need a better test, and we need treatments that don't put men at risk for impotence and incontinence. But, psa testing is what we have, today, in 2011and, likely, all that we will have for next few years.

I have been quoted in the N Y Times and other outlets about this. And, Malecare will be collaborating with our brother prostate cancer organizations to create an appropriate response from our community. But, we need to know what you think!
