Worldwide protest to defend the internet

We love the internet.
And we’re guessing you do too. Think about all the awesome things it gives us: A vast communication network; innovative businesses; a platform to freely speak or challenge powerful governments; and hundreds and hundreds of hours of cat videos.

All this great stuff is available because the internet was designed in an open and inclusive way, with a multitude of voices being able to get a say on how it’s governed.

But the internet is in danger.
There’s a meeting between the world’s governments in a just a few weeks, and it could very well decide the future of the internet through a binding international treaty. It’s called the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), and it’s being organized by a government-controlled UN agency called the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors. Some proposals allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others seek to impose new fees for accessing content, not to mention slowing down connection speeds. If the delicate balance of the internet is upset, it could have grave consequences for businesses and human rights.

This must be stopped.
Only governments get a vote at WCIT, so we need people from all around the world to demand that our leaders keep the internet open.

Most of the other governmental lobbying usually involves one or two governments this one concerns the entire planet. It looks like the statists are going for broke on this one. This either shows how arrogant they've become or how desperate they are to shut up dissenting voices. Let's take them on and kick their ass.

Statist loses election but wants to be Secretary of State

The good news: Congressman Howard Berman -- one of the lead supporters of SOPA -- lost his re-election bid last week. The bad news: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Berman is being considered as the replacement for Hillary Clinton when she steps down as Secretary of State in coming weeks. That would mean that he'd play a key role in developing global Internet policy! Please add your name at right to tell President Obama and the Senate that Berman has no place being considered for Secretary of State. Berman has spent decades representing Southern California, and has been one of the biggest shills for Hollywood and other forces that seek to censor the Internet: He was one of the original sponsors of SOPA, and unlike so many others who had the sense to wiithdraw their support after the Internet cried out, Berman has never backed down. But now the LA Times reports:

Berman, who has been chairman and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is among those now mentioned by U.S. officials as a possible replacement for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton when she departs next year.

If the United States really cares about global Internet freedom, there couldn't be a worse pick for Secretary of State than Berman, who's repeatedly tried to censor the web at Hollywood's behest -- and Hollywood's been leading a global charge to clamp down on Internet freedom. Let's put Obama and the Senate on notice.

Last week we got rid of this statist asshole through democratic means but we could end up stuck with him if we don't let Obama and our senators know that we don't want him. If he is a big SOPA supporter I don't want him anywhere near the controls for the internet. If he is so big with the Hollywood crowd then they can give him a job in the private sector so that way he can leave the rest of us alone.

Tell the Democrats and Republicans not to fuck with the net

Over the next few weeks, the Democrats and Republicans will hold conventions and adopt platforms to tell voters where they stand on key issues. Platforms help define legislative priorities for the parties and the lawmakers who belong to them: Adopting strong Internet freedom language will help ensure that we'll never have to deal with another SOPA or CISPA.

This political ritual only happens once every four years, so we have just days to demand that the two dominant parties make Internet Freedom a priority.

Sign our petition to the Democratic and Republican officials responsible for drafting their party platforms. Tell them to adopt the following language:

"The Democratic/Republican Party stands for a free and open Internet, unfettered by censorship and undue violations of privacy."

It's about time for the Democratic and Republican parties to stand up for Internet Freedom -- and to do it in writing. 2012 has been a landmark year for those who believe in the right of Americans to share information and communicate with each other free from censorship and surveillance.

Under the guise of "protecting consumers" like you and me with "net neutrality," "open access," and, of course, their favorite - "cybersecurity" - the statists have launched an all-out WAR for total control of the Internet.

The statists don't leave well enough alone. Now they trying to make a play to control the internet,again. Tell the House to oppose H.R. 3523

This coming week, Congress is set to take up another so-called "cybersecurity" bill, H.R. 3523, the "Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011" (CISPA).

And this time, many of those who joined us to stop SOPA and PIPA are supporting this legislation.

So only the immediate action of you and your fellow C4L members can help protect our privacy from the government's ever-expanding reach.

After our victory over SOPA/PIPA, I wrote to you in late February about the need to stay vigilant against Congress' attempts to assert more control over the Internet.

Well, since then, Republicans and Democrats have introduced at least four major "cybersecurity" bills.

Expanding government power is always bipartisan.

CISPA, sponsored by Rep. Mike Rogers (MI-8), is promoted as a harmless bill that will enable voluntary "information sharing" between private corporations and government agencies in the name of "cybersecurity."

Unfortunately, it would allow the transfer of vast amounts of data, including information like your Internet browsing history or email content, to any agency in the federal government, including non-civilian agencies such as the National Security Agency or the Department of Defense Cyber Command.

One major problem with these alleged "cybersecurity" bills is their overly broad focus on what information private companies are encouraged to share with federal agencies.

CISPA currently contains no incentive for private companies like Facebook or Google to remove personally identifiable information from data they share.

In addition, the way this legislation is drafted, it currently overrides privacy presumptions found in the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and the Communications Act regarding the privacy of an individual's online communications and related records.

Essentially, CISPA would deem all existing privacy laws null and void for "cybersecurity" purposes.

Once the government has this information, there are no meaningful restrictions on its use, as its only qualifier is that it must be related to "cybersecurity" or to protect "national security."

As C4L members know too well, "national security" has become a catch-all excuse for government powergrabs since 9/11.

Finally, while the bill includes a requirement for the Director of National Intelligence's Inspector General to issue annual reports on how the government is using the information shared under the bill, such reports would only be provided to congressional intelligence committees.

These reports would not constitute meaningful restrictions or do anything to dissuade the misuse of personal information shared under CISPA.

As I hinted at earlier, unlike the January 18 "Internet blackout" over SOPA and PIPA, this time Internet giants like Facebook and Twitter are openly supporting CISPA, along with powerful special interest groups like the US Chamber of Commerce.

In other words, don't expect the cavalry to back us up on this one.

And House Leadership is currently engaged in a full-court press effort to get your representative to support H.R. 3523.

Sources on the Hill have informed us of "members only" meetings, where representatives are being encouraged to vote for CISPA as a "national security" issue addressing a "credible" "cybersecurity threat."

I'm sure it's only a coincidence that this briefing comes conveniently just ahead of when the establishment wants to ram something through.

In the face of such longshot odds, without your immediate action, I can't promise that we have even the slightest chance of beating back this egregious invasion of your privacy.

But, I've seen the power the liberty movement can have when it speaks out with a unified voice.

And you better believe members of Congress have taken notice, too.

It just seems that this Congress just doesn't stop in fact every time some idiot gets a bad idea they have to draw up a bill to give some sort of legitimacy to it. CISPA,along with PIPA and SOPA,is a bad idea and unfortunately we're never going to run out of bad ideas but we can defeat them so the best thing to do is to weigh in your disgust at government censorship and let them know you will not tolerate it.

Keep the pressure on Zuckerberg to withdraw support for CISPA

CISPA,the new SOPA

Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.
